Summary:
MediaNews Group seeks a skilled, versatile, energetic journalist to join its design team. Viable candidates will have experience building newspaper pages using InDesign, and knowledge of AP style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Experience in Adobe Illustrator is helpful, along with some skill at and desire to help produce multiple daily and weekly publications. This job requires working a traditional evening/night copy desk schedule.
Please note: The schedule for this role will be Thursday - Monday evenings from 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm. While this is a fully remote role, you must currently reside in PA.
What you will do:
- Responsible for the presentation and on time delivery of pages for the assigned publication
- Copy editing and headline writing; editing for length, copy style and accuracy
- Promote visual storytelling via photographs, graphics, illustrations and typography in a presentation that is both logical and organized
- Regularly confers with the appropriate editors about story play
- Communicate with HUB leadership regarding page design as needed
- Develop a working knowledge of the specific publication being designed and how that relates to the reader
- Communicate with the prepress and production departments regarding quality control issues and the output of negatives
- Responsible for the proof of ancillary publications
- Communicate effectively with remote editors via appropriate channel
- Produce classified pages and post content to the web if applicable to assignment
- Curate, aggregate and edit information from syndicated, news, community organizations and residents to create the most complete publications possible
- Willingness to learn applicable software/platforms that are specific to the HUB department
- Ability to design any publication at a high level
What you will bring:

- Required platform knowledge: G-Suite, Microsoft Office, Adobe
- College degree from accredited four-year college or equivalent experience required
- 4+ years newspaper design experience is required
- Proven skills in news judgment, typography, page design, headline hierarchies and editing of stories, graphics and photographs
The hourly wage is $14.42 - $16.83. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).

The majority of our roles are 100% remote excluding Production & Circulation although some roles require customer visits or occasional in office work. We do not have any intention of returning to an in office environment/culture.
