Established in 1926, Mutual Trading Co., Inc. was originally a small co-op organization for centralized purchasing of basic import foods to service the needs of the early Japanese immigrant society in Southern California. We've grown 100 years now and command a premiere position among Japanese foodservice suppliers, as well as fill a key role as "Culinary Ambassador" promoting Japanese foods worldwide. Currently, we import, manufacture, and distribute over 8,000 Japanese foods, beverages, restaurant equipment and supplies.

Hours: M-F: 8AM – 5PM

Essential Job Functions

Outside Sales 70%

    Meets the monthly, quarterly, and annual sales quota as designated by Supervisor.

    Develops and visits new business relationships and manages existing accounts including restaurant chains, retailers, distributors, and wholesalers.  

    Makes inroads into various consumer bases by initiating new projects/ programs.

    Prepare, present, and communicate with existing and potential customers to provide support, information, and product sales.

    Increase sales by studying market trends and target demographics Complete knowledge of the product and service and

    Marketing support: preparing/updating Fresh Fish product catalog or newsletters. 

    Coordinates and assists the accounting department to collet AR payments from fresh fish only accounts in a timely manner. 

    Updates and prepare all monthly sales materials/reports as required by the Company.

    Produces/participates in trade shows/events as set by business objectives.

    Maintains high levels of customer satisfaction by providing excellent service and building rapport.

    Responds to, troubleshoots, and communicates with all customers in a timely manner.

    Educates customers on how the products or services can benefit them.

    Analyze data and produce reports on sales activities and results. 

Shipment and Support 30%

    Coordinates weekly logistics (Trucking and Air Shipments) operations for West coast Shipments: Track and Trace; release documentation; and product distribution to customers and branches. 

    Collaborate with warehouse and drivers on delivery routes based on customer’s requests. 

    Reports any direct shipment or hold service issues to appropriate department immediately.

    Maintains and safely navigates the Company vehicle as per the Company Vehicle Policy.

    Attends semiannual inventory count on designated day, possibly on a weekend.

    Attends Company events and functions outside of normal working hours.

    Other duties as required.

    Obligation to answer to all management as requested. 

    Collaborate with team members and divisions to achieve better results.

Physical Requirements

    Ability to drive and sit in a car for extended periods of time. 

    Ability to sit in an office for extended periods of time while working in the office.

    Ability to type and use a computer for extended periods of time.

    Frequent business travel as needed.

    Ability to reach, bend, kneel, and lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

    Ability to use the phone for extended periods of time.

    Working Conditions

o    Noise Level: Normal to loud while in the office

o    Location: Indoor in the office or travel to the field to visit customers, restaurants, wholesalers, distributors, etc.

Other Requirements

    Business level English – Read/write/speak/listen

    Business Level Japanese required; Native level Japanese preferred – Read/write/speak/listen

    Conversational level Chinese preferred

    To have and maintain a clean driving record

    Maintain a positive attitude 

    Ability to work independently and as a team

    Ability to adapt to frequent changes in assignments and workload

    AA Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree or above preferred

    Minimum 1 years of food wholesale/distribution experience required, preferably in the Fish wholesale industry

Knowledge and Skills

    Basic mathematical knowledge – markups, discounts, combining/converting measurements, counting inventory, etc.

    Data Compiling and Analysis skills

    Demonstrates strong organizational skills and attention to detail

    Problem-solving skills

    Basic Microsoft Office proficiency 

    Communication and interpersonal skills Continuous improvement mindset 

    Knowledge and previous attendance of tradeshows preferred

    Knowledge of Japanese foods and sakes preferred
