Outside Machinist II is a skilled, semi-independent role focused on the repair, installation, and overhaul of shipboard mechanical systems. This technician reliably performs work with moderate supervision and demonstrates growing proficiency with machining tools, blueprints, and precision measurements.
ResponsibilitiesTechnical Duties
Set up, align, and operate portable machining tools and standard hand tools.
Use precision instruments—including calipers, verniers, depth/height gauges, layout tools, tachometers, thermometers, and vibration indicators—to take and record accurate measurements.
Interpret and work from basic to intermediate-level blueprints, sketches, and specifications.
Assist with the disassembly, repair, installation, testing, and inspection of shipboard machinery such as pumps, valves, propulsion machinery, ventilation equipment, and steering gear.
Complete required documentation for repairs, measurements, inspections, and equipment tests.
Mechanical Systems Repair & Overhaul
Work on the disassembly, repair, installation, testing, and inspection of shipboard machinery, including but not limited to:
Propulsion machinery
Pumps, valves, and launchers
Ventilation equipment and discharge machinery
Steering gear and propulsion plants
Evaporators, heaters, and condensers
Torpedo tubes, shutter doors, and antenna mast mechanical groups
Safety & Quality
Maintain strict compliance with safety rules, quality standards, and housekeeping practices.
Use appropriate PPE for skin, body, hearing, and vision protection as required..
Ensure work meets NAVSEA and company standards.
Teamwork
Assist senior machinists on complex tasks.
Support mentoring of junior employees as needed.
Minimum of 6 years of mechanical/machinist experience; senior-level proficiency preferred.
High School Diploma/GED with apprenticeship training, relevant vocational schooling, or equivalent military mechanical experience.
Ability to obtain government base access and required security clearances.
Successful completion of practical and knowledge-based skills tests.
NAVSEA-recognized certifications as needed (Hatch Inspector, SUBSAFE, Electroplating, Deep Submergence Systems SOC MCD A/B/C).
Must be a U.S. citizen and not a dual citizen.
Willingness to travel up to 75% of the year, including extended or short-notice assignments.
Ability to work in confined spaces, overhead structures, and physically demanding environments.
