POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a resilient, high‑energy Orbital Cloud Solutions Architect to define, build, and evolve the end‑to‑end cloud ecosystem that powers Axiom’s operations on Earth and on‑orbit within Axiom’s Orbital Data Centers (ODCs). This role serves as the technical and strategic leader responsible for architecting scalable, secure, and mission‑ready cloud solutions that integrate seamlessly across ground systems, space‑based infrastructure, and customer‑facing platforms. The ideal candidate brings deep cloud engineering expertise, a systems‑level mindset, and the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams in a fast‑paced, pioneering environment.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Architect and Deliver Axiom’s Ground and On‑Orbit Cloud Infrastructure

  • Develop the cloud architecture, requirements, and system design for Axiom’s ground and ODC environments, supporting mission control operations, in‑space infrastructure, software development, and customer‑driven product platforms.

  • Design workflow automation pipelines that maximize cloud resource utilization, availability, and operational efficiency.

  • Deploy, optimize, and maintain AI/ML workflows and technology stacks across ground and orbital environments.

  • Oversee configuration control and lifecycle management of cloud‑related hardware and software.

  • Provide technical leadership to engineering teams implementing integrated cloud solutions spanning terrestrial and space‑based systems.

  • Collaborate with program management to plan, schedule, and execute cloud development, integration, and test activities.

  • Architect and deploy an extensible, automated problem‑reporting and issue‑tracking system that supports secure collaboration with cloud service providers and technology partners.

  • Partner closely with cloud vendors and technology partners to ensure seamless integration, testing, and ongoing support of cloud services.

Ensure Sustainability, Security, and Resilience of Axiom’s Cloud Ecosystem

  • Establish and manage strategic relationships with third‑party cloud providers to ensure alignment with Axiom’s technical, operational, and security requirements.

  • Support the ODC team in structuring and negotiating customer engagements involving cloud infrastructure, including partnerships with external providers.

  • Advise product teams on developing cloud capabilities for mission‑critical operations and shared infrastructure supporting revenue‑generating services.

  • Implement and maintain configuration management, quality assurance, access control, and cybersecurity frameworks across all cloud environments.

Lead the Evolution of Cloud Capabilities for Ground and On‑Orbit Operations

  • Identify, evaluate, and communicate emerging cloud technologies and capabilities across the organization.

  • Align Axiom’s cloud strategy and infrastructure roadmap with broader business, mission, and technology objectives.

  • Lead the design and deployment of cloud infrastructure upgrades to support evolving mission and customer needs.

  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership on cloud priorities, risks, opportunities, and strategic direction.

  • Investigate advanced cloud hardware and software technologies to drive innovation across Axiom’s ground and orbital systems.

  • Serve as an ambassador for Axiom’s ODC capabilities within the space industry and cloud technology ecosystems.

  • Present findings and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.

  • Systematically document progress, capture knowledge, and maintain an engineering notebook.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

Required

  • Demonstrated expertise in IT, Computer Science, or Software Engineering through extensive professional experience and industry certifications.

  • 10+ years of total professional experience.

  • 10+ years of experience architecting cloud infrastructure and technology solutions within AWS, Microsoft Azure, Red Hat, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, or comparable environments.

  • 5+ years of experience working with DoD organizations, requirements, and DoD‑utilized cloud environments (e.g., AWS GovCloud, Microsoft GCC High).

  • Proven ability to build cloud infrastructure from the ground up or modernize existing systems in response to evolving cloud technologies.

  • Extensive background in public, private, and hybrid cloud architectures, service definition, infrastructure implementation, and software development.

  • Experience applying emerging technologies to design, deploy, monitor, and improve cloud solutions in collaboration with IT professionals and space systems engineers.

  • Experience advising engineering teams on cloud best practices and architectural patterns.

  • Hands‑on experience with Agile and DevSecOps methodologies, including software development, testing, delivery, configuration management, and problem‑reporting tools.

  • Deep understanding of industry security standards and protocols, including ISO 27001 and NIST frameworks.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced expertise in IT, Computer Science, or Software Engineering demonstrated through certifications, hands‑on experience, or thought leadership.

  • Relevant cloud certifications, such as:

    • AWS Certified Solutions Architect

    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate

    • Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP)

    • Cloud Security Alliance: Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK)

  • Experience developing resilient edge computing or disconnected cloud services for remote or bandwidth‑constrained environments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Requirements 

  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones.

Physical Requirements

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time)

  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time)
