The Optometrist will perform routine procedures using independent professional judgment in the practice of optometry, within the scope of the laws of the state of California, the rules and regulations of the California Board of Optometry, and the policies of QueensCare Health Centers.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports and implements the organization’s vision, mission and values.
  • Determines priorities and method of completing daily workload to insure that all responsibilities are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Performs all job functions in a professional and courteous manner. This includes answering all phone calls and emails timely and providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Fosters and promotes a culture of service excellence and accountability.
  • Examines the internal and external structure of the eyes to diagnose eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disorders; systemic diseases like hypertension and diabetes; and vision conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. Optometrists also do testing to determine the patient’s ability to focus and coordinate eyes, and to judge depth and see colors accurately.
  • Prescribes eyeglasses, contact lenses, low vision aids, vision therapy and medicines to treat eye diseases. Where services are not provided by QueensCare Health Centers or are outside scope of Optometrists, refer appropriately.
  • Examines and treat all patients scheduled to be seen by that Optometrist at QueensCare Health Centers.
  • Completes he patient’s charts in the Electronic Health Record system according to the usual accepted standards of optometric practice and according to the specific requirements set forth by the medical records department.
  • Participates in all departmental meetings as scheduled by the Director of Service; to participate in any or all meetings scheduled by the Chief Medical Officer.
  • Supervises optical staff to ensure accurate services are given.
  • Communicates with optical, support staff, management, and fellow OD teams to optimize quality and clinical care and service to patients
  • Maintains all licensing and job requirements (CE, CPR, safety training, PPD)
  • Uses discretion and judgment in handling sensitive or confidential information, answers all employee and client inquiries in a timely and courteous manner and listen to employee disputes and understands which decisions can be made alone and which decisions need to involve others.
  • Complies with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Completion of accredited four-year post-graduate degree program to earn their Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) Successful completion of Optometry State Board examination to become licensed to practice in the State of California

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to use computer for documentation of patient chart in Electronic Health Record system and general computer/internet skills for email communications or other duties as assigned.

Skills Required

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from an accredited program
  • Licensed to practice optometry in the State of California (passed Optometry State Board exam)
  • Maintain required credentials and trainings (continuing education, CPR, PPD, safety training)
  • Clinical skills to perform eye exams, diagnose eye/systemic diseases, and prescribe glasses, contacts, and treatments
  • Ability to document patient charts in an Electronic Health Record and use general computer/email skills
