Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you’ve come to the right place!
E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of space-powered Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are fundamentally changing the design, economics, manufacturing, coverage limitations and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.
By building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system—with a unique antenna design, highly sustainable spacecraft system and low-cost, small portable end-user devices—we can extend global satellite coverage, capacity and connectivity beyond legacy space services to provide a new kind of IoT platform that lets users sense, track, connect and act on information gathered, anywhere.
We’re intentional, we’re unapologetically curious and we’re 100% committed to saving space, protecting our planet and turning connectivity into actionable intelligence.
We are on the brink of expanding our optomechanical capabilities, and the successful implementation of our projects hinges on precise and comprehensive testing of components and prototypes. The Optical Engineer in charge of lab testing activities will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and quality of our optical components. This position is fundamental to our mission of delivering cutting-edge optomechanical solutions by validating designs through rigorous testing and characterization, which will ultimately lead to successful pre-production runs and enhanced supplier collaborations.
This position will report to our Senior Photonics Engineer and will be based in our Toulouse, France office.
What you will be doing:
- Leading the testing and characterization of optical components and prototypes to ensure they meet design specifications and performance criteria.
- Developing and implementing testing protocols and procedures for newly ordered optomechanical equipment.
- Analyzing test data and preparing detailed reports on the performance and reliability of components and prototypes.
- Collaborating with the engineering team to troubleshoot and resolve any issues identified during the testing phase.
- Setting up and managing the lab environment to ensure it is equipped and organized for efficient testing activities.
- Overseeing the implementation of testing procedures at the supplier level to ensure consistency and quality in production.
- Preparing for and executing pre-production runs, ensuring all components and systems are thoroughly tested and validated before full-scale production.
- Continuously improving testing methodologies and staying updated with the latest advancements in optical engineering and testing technologies.
What you bring to this role:
- A BSc/MSc degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a strong background in optical systems and components.
- 5+ years of experience in optical testing, characterization, and quality assurance, preferably in an optomechanical context.
- Proficiency in using optical testing equipment and software for data analysis.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail to identify and solve problems during the testing process.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively document and convey test results and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Experience in managing lab environments and setting up testing protocols.
- Ability to adapt and evolve the role towards overseeing supplier-level testing and supporting pre-production activities.
- A proactive and innovative mindset, with a commitment to maintaininghigh standards of quality and performance in all testing activities.
Bonus points:
- Experience with free space optical systems
- C/C++ or Python skills
- Experience with optical simulation tool, such as Zemax Optics Studio
- Experience with ANOVA methodology, including Gauge R&R studies and data post-processing on a statistical software (such as JMP).

What We Do
E-Space is a global space company focused on bridging Earth and space with the most sustainable low earth orbit (LEO) network that is expected to reach over one hundred thousand multi-application communication satellites to help businesses and governments securely and affordably access the power of space to solve problems on Earth.
Founded by industry pioneer Greg Wyler, E-Space is focused on democratizing space and transforming industries by bringing down the cost of space-based communications, raising the level of satellite system resiliency and setting a new standard in sustainable space infrastructure that will effectively minimize and reduce space debris and destruction while preserving access to space for future generations.
