Non-CA Pay Range (Annual):

$121,000.00 - $224,600.00

Job Description:

The Staff Optical Design Engineer is responsible for optical designs of high speed transmit/receive optical assemblies (TROSA's) for next generation coherent transceivers andserves as a primary engineering contact among PIC, transceiver electrical, and mechanical designteams. The position requires multitasking and interfacing with cross-functional engineering groups in multiple geographic locations.

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated experience in optical and /or photonic integrated circuit design, as well as a solid understanding of optoelectronic devices and hands-on experiences with designing and testing micro-optical assemblies for high-volume manufacturing.The position is within the Optical Modules Group and is based in Allentown, PA.

 

Responsibilities:

• Optical architecture and design for coherent optical transceiver products. 

• Optics design layout and simulations; test vehicle design and testing; data analysis

• Generate optical sub-component specifications and verify / validate components can meet overall product requirements. 

• Conduct failure analysis on optical sub-components, as needed, and generate any necessary corrective actions or design/process improvements. 

• Characterize and measure performance of prototype TROSA optical functions. Work with test engineering team to create optical test specifications and procedures for TROSAmanufacturing and test.

• Primary optical engineering interface with PIC, ASIC, and transceiver electrical and firmware designers.

 

Requirements:

• M.S. degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (electronics, electro-optics), Materials Science, Photonics, or Physics (optics, semiconductors) + experience in photonic integration

• Strong optical design skills, from concept to high volume; Knowledge of optical component fabrication and assembly, highly desirable

• In-depth understanding of optical beam propagation and scattering as related to optical signal loss and contributions to optical noise that can impact high-level design requirements

• Proficient in optical design software packages, such as Zemax. Knowledge of 3D mechanical CAD and thermal simulation tools is desirable

• Proficiency in characterization and automated testing of optoelectronic devices; Strong laboratory measurement skills

• Demonstrated ability to initiate, prioritize, and drive projects to completion

• Ability to effectively communicate ideas, concepts, and results to both highly technical and non-technical co-workers

• Ability to function independently, as well as in a team environment. A positive attitude is essential.
