As an Optical AIT Engineering Tech I here at Honeywell Aero space, you will play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of optical and electrical systems and equipment. You will be responsible for building prototypes from clean sheet designs, and troubleshooting, repairing, and testing optical components of existing prototypes. You will be building complex optical and electronic systems as well as providing technical support to the engineering team as needed. You must have experience with free space optical setups including building setups from scratch, 6-axis system alignment and optical performance assessment with aid of opto-electronic equipment. Your expertise in opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems will contribute to the success of our projects and ensure the reliability and functionality of our products. In this role, you will impact the development and improvement of opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems, ensuring their performance and functionality meet the highest standards.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute build and test of opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems based on drawings and procedural documentation. Includes both lab-based systems and customer deliverable hardware.
  • Setup of test equipment, monitoring and measuring instruments, and other apparatus, and perform a wide variety of low-level and sub-assembly testing activities on breadboard units, prototype units and production units., electronic circuitry, and cables/harnesses.
  • Operate various optical measurement tools including Zygo interferometers, optical power meters, lasers, and scientific cameras.
  • Execute and contribute to the development of automation scripting of opto-electronic and opto-mechanical lab equipment.
  • Read harness drawings and execute build, including wiring and soldering, and test, including safe-to-mate procedures and pinout verification. 
  • Collaborate with various engineering disciplines to identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Troubleshoot opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems and equipment using measurement and diagnostic tools to test performance.
  • Conduct tests and experiments with new materials, equipment, and processes to develop data for specification call-out or to determine suitability of a material for specific applications.
  • Draft procedures and record laboratory notes and other details to capture relevant details.
  • Make sketches and marks up drawings as needed to communicate proposed changes.
  • Improve and refine existing fixtures, devices, methods, and process steps or procedures, implementing changes as necessary.
  • Provide technical support to the engineering team.
  • Grow and develop your technical knowledge in a team-based culture focused on innovation and customer satisfaction.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems and products.

The Honeywell building is a controlled goods program environment. Candidates must be eligible for CGP and CSP clearance.

Qualifications

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Technical diploma or degree in a relevant program from an accredited college or university.
  • 1-3 years of experience in lab-based optics and optical setups in a test environment.
  • Hands-on experience with building and testing opto-mechanical and opto-electrical setups and systems.
  • Knowledge of opto-mechanical components and systems.
  • Knowledge of opto-electronic components and systems.
  • Understanding of electrical harnessing, experience in soldering and creation of harnessing, and a willingness to develop and execute these skills.
  • Ability to execute, edit, and write test scripts in at least one of Matlab or Python.

The annual base salary range for this position is $57,500-76,000) in Cambridge, ON, Canada. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline.
