About the Cruise Legal Organization:

Cruise is creating a new-to-the-world service and a world-changing category of autonomous vehicle mobility. On the legal side, the rules are being written now, and we’re the team charged with helping guide the company on legal and risk considerations as we unlock the future. We’re a collegial group in which every role matters, and you will have an impact on high stakes decisions, working with technical and development teams solving some of the hardest engineering challenges of our generation. This position will report to our Assistant General Counsel, Employment.

About the role:

Cruise is seeking a hardworking and self-motivated Senior Workplace Investigator to join the Litigation, Employment & Investigations team in its San Francisco office. In this role, you will be responsible for any workplace matter that may be a potential violation of law or company policy. You will promptly conduct, track, and close out workplace investigations in close cooperation with our HR Business Partner and Employee Relations teams, and also partner as necessary with other teams at Cruise, such as the Ethics & Compliance and Security teams. You will make recommendations to management for addressing workplace concerns and help create long-term solutions for systemic issues. You will advise on appropriate investigation procedures and documentation. The ideal candidate demonstrates a high degree of empathy while providing direct feedback, is highly collaborative, maintains composure in difficult situations, and is excited by the challenge of designing, building, and scaling the Company’s investigation processes and procedures. While technical skills, experience, a strong work ethic, and knowledge are vital requisites of this role, the best candidates are also personable, organized, and demonstrate the ability to act with efficiency, accuracy, flexibility, and creativity. This position will be based at Cruise’s headquarters in San Francisco and will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Employment.

Day-to-day responsibilities Include:

  • Investigate complaints involving violations of law or policy, including allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, bullying, privacy concerns, conflicts of interest, integrity, and other inappropriate behavior
  • Actively manage all aspects of investigations, including background research, interviews, the preservation of data, tracking progress, and documentation of conclusions and any recommended remediations
  • Competently analyze and synthesize relevant documents and data, make objective findings, and cohesively summarize the investigation addressing all relevant legal and policy issues
  • Provide timely communication to all relevant parties throughout the investigations process
  • Remain respectful and empathetic in the face of difficult and uncomfortable situations
  • Provide advice and investigation design guidance to the Employee Relations team
  • Partner with HR Business Partners, Employee Relations, and our Security teams to ensure cross-functional investigations and disciplinary processes are handled fairly, promptly, consistently, and in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements
  • Create, update, and improve internal processes, templates, training, guidelines, and playbooks for workplace investigations
  • Work closely and effectively with teams across Cruise on various risk mitigation initiatives and programs

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 8+ years of Employee Relations/Workplace Investigations experience in either an HRBP role or Employee Relations role, or equivalent experience in an employment lawyer role or supporting an employment law team
  • Experience dealing with employment law principles and conducting and advising on investigations, performance management, and coaching/development
  • Exceptional writing and communications skills, with a demonstrated ability to provide direct feedback and persuasively convey recommendations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership
  • Self-motivated with the ability to both self-manage and manage a team to achieve project objectives
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with ability to organize and analyze data
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize issues under time pressure

  • JD and experience practicing law with an employment law focus
  • Formal training and/or Certification in Investigations
  • Experience working in tech, especially for a large or scaling organization
