Illumina is looking to recruit an experienced Privacy Specialist to support Illumina's compliance with global privacy and data protection laws and regulations, ensure privacy-by-design is at the forefront of our approach, and to provide support for privacy and data-related client and contractual issues and complex data use issues under HIPAA, GDPR and other privacy regulations.

In this role, the Privacy Specialist will be a key member of the Privacy & Ethics team, while also working closely with the Legal, Product Development, Compliance and Information Security functions to provide guidance on global data privacy matters, help with review of relevant contracts, embed privacy-by-design in products and projects, and develop and monitor policies and procedures applicable to the business and in compliance with global data privacy laws and regulations. The successful candidate will be a privacy professional with a proven track record of serving as a collaborative, pragmatic, and determined privacy partner to a variety of business units.

Duties will include:

  • Conduct and review Privacy Impact Assessments, Data Protection Impact Assessments, and Transfer Impact Assessments including evaluating and assigning risk ratings.
  • Create and maintain records of processing activities for required programs and information systems.
  • Manage data subject access requests.
  • Assist with developing and administering privacy policy and privacy compliance training.
  • Work with key internal stakeholders in the review of projects and related data to assess compliance with global data privacy laws and Illumina privacy standards.
  • Draft, negotiate, and interpret privacy, security and data use and protection terms in contracts and disclosures, including Data Protection Addendums and Intra Company Agreements, consistent with Illumina's strategy and goals.
  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA, and CPRA and a good understanding of other major privacy frameworks and evolving legislation, security laws, rules and regulations worldwide, as well as industry leading-practices and standards especially as it relates to lab services.
  • Review issues related to Incident Response, customer security questionnaires and security certifications.
  • Promote effective work practices, work as a team member, and show respect for co-workers.



Education and Experience:

  • Either a legal, privacy, business, or information technology degree/qualification or equivalent industrial experience
  • 5-10 years of directly applicable experience, preferably in the life sciences field
  • Exceptional written and verbal skills
  • Hold at least one Data Protection and/or Privacy certification such as, CIPP, CIPT, ISEB, etc., (preferred)
  • Experience with US and EU data privacy laws
  • Experience reviewing contracts and conducting Privacy Impact Assessments
  • Experience working in a regulated industry



The candidate's preferred location will be within a commutable distance to one of our locations in San Diego, CA, Foster City, CA, or Madison, WI. Illumina offers hybrid work arrangements.
