Position Description: The Metadata Technology Manager serves as the primary product owner for specific Gale enterprise metadata and periodical content systems. This person will collaborate with metadata system users, Agile teams, developers, and product management partners to ensure the delivery of system enhancement projects and strategic platform initiatives. These systems and tools must produce quality metadata, curate our metadata, reduce costs, reduce time to market, and ultimately delight Gale customers.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Represents Metadata Services on cross-functional platform and project development teams. Works closely with GPT and GTS engineering and architecture leads to propose, manage, develop, and deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Works with technical teams to resolve production issues for assigned systems.
  • Coordinates participation of user representatives, Solutions Analysts, and SMEs in requirements clarification, design, QA, and testing, and release/deployment activities.
  • Collaborates with platform managers, technical leads, and systems analysts to establish and maintain effective and efficient participation in a specific team's cadence.
  • Creates key project planning and funding request artifacts that effectively articulate the business justification for investing in metadata systems.
  • Initiates, supports, and supplies research and evaluation of Cengage and third-party software and tools.
  • Leads discussions with existing and prospective business partners to articulate business needs that can be addressed or improved with metadata systems.
  • Coordinates, creates, or supplies content workflows, dataflow diagrams, and other artifacts that define business requirements for content systems. Ensures artifacts are created and validated.
  • Supports creation of user documentation and training materials, user acceptance testing, and transition of tools to end users, working with metadata and GPT teams as needed.
  • Fosters a team atmosphere where colleagues are invested in each other's success and the overall success of the business.
  • Represents team in cross-functional management or project teams; coordinates project activities between departments and between Cengage and outside contractors, vendors, and partners.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed to achieve company goals.



Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • 2 years' experience with software applications that support the development, production, and delivery of content and/or metadata to digital publishing applications, such as structured text editors, content management systems, and relational databases, and related content technologies such as SQL and XML.
  • Ability to quickly master new technical skills, software programs, and production processes.
  • Experience in the software development lifecycle and business process definition methods.
  • Ability to design and implement structured analyses of complex issues.
  • Demonstrated success at handling multiple projects and tasks and meeting established timelines.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and ability to align teams toward common goals across functional areas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Effective communications with technical and non-technical staff and vendors.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Proven record of working effectively with partners by crafting approaches that are appropriate and positive.
  • Consistent record of being flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.



Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience with use of publishing systems and support of digital products in the learning publishing domains.
  • Knowledge of publishing industry and familiarity with Cengage Learning markets, customers, and digital products.
