General Description:

The Director IT Systems Engineering is responsible and accountable for the development and maintenance of the organization's hyperconverged infrastructure, storage, physical / virtual compute, application virtualization, cloud operations, and database administration. This role oversees the team responsible for the planning and engineering of the organization's system infrastructure and ensures that hardware and or software is designed and installed in a manner that supports the strategic goals and objectives set by the organization. The Director IT Engineering creates functional strategies and specific objectives which support ease of care delivery. The incumbent is in charge of working with peers and leaders within both IT and the organization, dealing with strategic vendors, and performing mid-range planning as it relates to the system architecture. The Director, IT Systems Engineering will work cross functionally within a matrixed environment and have accountability to leaders across the infrastructure and application pillars, while reporting directly to the VP & Chief Technology Officer.

  • Supports the implementation Windows engineering items to include Intune, MFA, DLP, Cloud App Security, Defender ATP and Defender Endpoint
  • Provides large environments focused on automation and software patching.
  • Ensures products meet the necessary requirements for security, portability, and performance, while balancing the end user experience.
  • Meets tight business timelines, within established and measured required SLAs.
  • Develops, deploys, and supports processes to support data projects.
  • Builds strategic partnerships with vendors and hold them accountable for delivery.
  • Develops operational support structure, logging, alerting, and establishing tools, standards, and operational procedures.
  • Works across a multitude of third-party solution providers each fulfilling a portion of the overall service delivery.
  • Exhibits critical thinking by seeing outcomes and providing direction when there are multiple stakeholders and solutions.
  • Ensures concise, clear, and regular verbal and written communication between business partners and the IT organization.
  • Adheres to established standards by the IT organization.
  • Creates control features to ensure systems effectively meet the organization's quality standards.
  • Engages in quality control procedures to ensure that systems are efficient and operational.
  • Develops a cost-efficient system for projects by performing cost-benefit analysis.
  • Ensures that the organization is operating at maximum efficiency>
  • Participates in the development and operationalizes the organization's technology strategy by recommending short- and long-term IT goals and objectives to leadership team.
  • Creates a culture of IT professionals focused on deep business alignment, accountability for outcomes, and continuous improvement.
  • Supports the design and delivery of large-scale, complex technology programs with a focus on cloud and desktop virtualization, leveraging virtualization tools such as Citrix, Vmware, Azure, etc.
  • Develops and designs architecture and infrastructure roadmaps, implementation strategies and transformation plans focused on the enablement of care delivery.
  • Develops team members ensuring they can problem solve, think critically, and deliver services within documented SLAs.
  • Interacts closely with the organization's leadership team to understand enterprise priorities and support needs.
  • Participates in the IT governance process and decision making impacting enterprise priorities and strategies.
  • Keeps knowledge base articles and Configuration Management DataBase (CMDB) current.
  • Maintains effective relationships and communications with executives, department heads and other key customers in departmental supported areas.
  • Promotes a customer-service oriented support organization.
  • Resolves, proactively, issues encountered during and post system implementation, working with all levels of personnel within the organization.
  • Evaluates new technologies/software that may provide opportunities for solutions or new applications necessary to accomplish organizational goals, objectives, and strategies.
  • Ensures optimization of the team's resources through effective resource management.
  • Collaborates with other Business Leaders for planning and deployment activities to ensure high levels of IT Systems Engineering performance and integration with enterprise processes.
  • Works closely with HR, Finance, Security, Compliance and Legal groups to ensure policies are upheld and budget commitments are achieved.
  • Establishes and promotes Systems Engineering key performance indicators.
  • Complies with change management.
  • Is the IT sponsor accountable and responsible for any IT Systems Engineering needed in support of implementations, as appropriate.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the IT Infrastructure department to achieve secure, reliable, and cost-effective operations of IT infrastructure and applications
  • Drives transformational change and innovation while balancing business, infrastructure, budget, and technology needs.



General Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, healthcare administration required. An equivalent amount of education or experience may be substituted for minimum educational requirements.

Experience: Minimum eight (8) years IT leadership in a large, complex, academic health system and progressive responsibility in healthcare information technology or related industry. Eight or more (8+) years of providing IT Systems Engineering services within the healthcare academic medical center sector, including clinical and business stakeholders as well as patients. Prior experience with Microsoft suite of tools preferred. Acute and ambulatory setting experience preferred. Strong background in Hospital / Healthcare provider and ambulatory (clinic) environments.

Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: ITIL Foundation required. MCSE and VCP preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of IT Systems Engineering function within a healthcare environment.
  • Understanding of Project Management methodology based on project management principles.
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with public cloud offerings such as AWS, GCP, and Azure.
  • Knowledge in DevOps culture, including familiarity with automated testing, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code, a plus.
  • Knowledge of Server hardware platforms Enterprise high density and stand-alone server hardware platforms.
  • Strong understanding of Windows Server operations and roles.
  • Strong understanding of VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi hypervisor operations. Strong understanding of other virtualization platforms such as Citrix Xen, Microsoft Hyper-V, and cloud services, and SaaS.
  • Strong understanding of LAN, WAN, and storage network technology. This includes hardware devices and software protocols and services.
  • Strong understanding of local, SAN, and NAS storage technologies from vendors such as Pure, and EMC.
  • Administrative knowledge of MS SQL Server, DB/2 and other databases. Knowledge of clustering, high availability, backups, and log handling is also required.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365, including mailbox management, database management, high availability, clustering, security, and anti-spam products.
  • High-level understanding of information security principles and technology.
  • High-level understanding of DR/BC technology and methodology, backups, restores, replication, and associated systems from a variety of vendors
  • High-level understanding of Development tools, including Azure DevOps, Visual Studio, Jenkins, Git, etc.
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage agile technical teams in infrastructure, devops, site reliability, NOC and similar.
  • Significant experience managing and implementing business applications and infrastructure.
  • Ensures key business strategies and processes are supported by technology systems that enable growth and flexibility.
  • Seeks and evaluates emerging technologies and educate business stakeholders on the potential for new technologies to deliver return on investment by enabling business innovation, efficiency, and competitive advantage.
  • Ensures service-level requirements are met while upholding all regulatory and compliance standards.
  • Demonstrates a management style that encourages mentorship, teamwork, participation, communication, and service orientation.
  • Empowers the IT team to succeed, assists in removing roadblocks, and coaches the team to high levels of performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to elicit, analyze and communicate business requirements from multiple customers across disparate functions.
  • Understanding of integrated delivery systems of a large, multi-site academic health system.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analysis.
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate results to choose the best solutions and solve problems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in assessing and mitigating risks through risk planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and/or strategic and tactical planning and execution including marketing, communications and financial planning.
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management and ITIL key practices and concepts.
  • Ability to manage internal IT and outsourced vendors to meet service levels.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to navigate the political landscape of the organization.
  • Demonstrates executive presence, broad thinking and is articulate across all levels of the enterprise.
  • Capacity to deliver on deadlines while contributing to various stakeholders, projects and business relationships at once.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and thrive in ambiguity, remain cool-headed with curve balls, and withstand the tests of a dynamic environment with resilience and resolve.
