ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an Atmospheric Balloon Launcher to join our team supporting the Los Alamos National Laboratory! This position is part-time and will be based out of Glendale, AZ. The Balloon Launcher position will contribute to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Desert-Urban System Integrated Atmospheric Monsoon (DUSTIEAIM) campaign, a collaboration between DOE ARM, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Arizona State University (ASU). Weather balloon launches (also referred to as radiosonde launches) collect important atmospheric data and are a critical part of DUSTIEAIM’s success. Balloon launches will occur at designated times throughout the campaign, which involves preparing the radiosonde, inflating the balloon, and safely releasing the entire flight train.

Responsibilities

  • This position requires a non-standard work schedule, including weekends, nights, early mornings, and holidays.

  • Launch radiosondes (weather balloons):

    • Radiosonde preparation

    • Inflation of the weather balloon

    • Release of the balloon

  • Collection and analysis of data collected during launches.

  • Collaboration with various teams contributing to the DUSTIEAIM campaign.

  • Compliance with safety protocols.

  • Timeliness in arrival to site and execution of launches (launches are time-sensitive).

Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – High School Diploma.

  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.

  • Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.

  • Skilled in effective communication, both verbal and written.

  • Interest in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Experience working in flexible environments.

  • Experience working both independently and within a team.

  • Attention to detail.

Working Environment:

  • Activities will be performed in the outdoor research area of ASU’s West Valley Campus in Glendale, AZ.

  • Balloon launchers should be prepared to work in the outdoor elements, including sun exposure, heat, rain, and dust.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) including dust masks, eye protection, and gloves will be provided.

About the Site

The NNSA's Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), located in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is a design laboratory responsible for the safety and reliability of the nuclear explosives package in nuclear weapons. This lab possesses unique capabilities in neutron scattering, enhanced surveillance, radiography, and plutonium science and engineering (energy.gov).
