The Opportunity

We are seeking an Operations Director to serve as a strategic partner and Chief of Staff supporting our Corporate Communications function. In this role, you will act as the primary strategic ally to the Vice President of Corporate Communications and their leadership team, translating high-level vision into actionable operational blueprints. You will orchestrate the organizational heartbeat of the function, ensuring streamlined decision-making, rigorous financial management, and robust change management across complex, high-impact workstreams.

  • Strategic Partnership: Serve as the primary operations lead and Chief of Staff to the VP of Corporate Communications and their leadership team, translating long-term vision into near-term operational plans.

  • Governance & Facilitation: Design, manage, and facilitate leadership meetings to optimize prioritization, foster collaboration, and drive effective enterprise business decisions.

  • Business & Financial Planning: Lead and facilitate fit-for-purpose business planning (including strategy development, long-term planning, and T0/MTO planning) alongside resource management, budget forecasting, and headcount planning.

  • People Practices: Oversee operational people strategies for the function, including managing the cycles for year-end performance reviews, talent management, and succession planning.

  • Change Management & Execution: Lead complex, cross-functional workstreams, Work Product Teams, and Steering Committees impacting corporate reputation, patient access, and profitability.

  • Engagement Strategy: Develop and execute multi-channel communication and engagement strategies to drive innovation, belonging, and collaboration within the function and across the enterprise.

  • Enterprise Leadership: Champion "new ways of working" and collaborate across the Strategy and Business Operations Leadership Team and the broader commercial operations community.

Who you are

  • You possess a Bachelor’s degree.

  • You bring 8 or more years of relevant experience specifically focused on operations, management consulting, or strategy and operations.

  • You have a proven track record explicitly serving as an Operations Lead / Chief of Staff (or in a highly similar capacity).

  • You possess expert-level project management skills with demonstrated experience leading large-scale change management initiatives, vendor management, and policy development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management Certification (e.g., PMI, PMP) is highly desirable.

  • 5 or more years of experience managing operations specifically supporting communications, public relations, marketing, or corporate affairs activities.

  • Prior experience managing external vendors and independent contractors.

  • Deep expertise or strong familiarity within the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, including an aptitude for healthcare compliance.

Location:

  • This position is based in South San Francisco, CA at our Genentech Campus or in Washington DC at our Genentech Office

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $156,500/yr to $290,700/yr. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below. Benefits
