ESW is seeking an Operational Risk Specialist with a strong track record in identifying, assessing, monitoring, and mitigating operational risks to join our ambitious team in Madrid, Spain. The role will support the Company’s business and functional lines in maintaining their accountability and responsibility for in scope processes, risks and controls.

Your expertise will be crucial in implementing effective risk management strategies, policies, and procedures, and providing guidance and coaching to maintain excellence in our practices.

Responsibilities

Risk Identification and Assessment:

  • Identify, assess, and monitor operational risks across the organization.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Support business and functional lines in maintaining accountability for in-scope processes, risks, and controls.
  • Collaborate and mentor senior leadership to promote the use and continuity of effective approaches.
  • Conduct necessary testing and review as required by risk committees and the Head of ORM,

Risk Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Develop and maintain operational risk registers, ensuring all identified risks are documented and monitored by the relevant function(s).
  • Prepare and present regular risk reports to senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Implement key risk indicators (KRIs) and monitor them to detect early signs of potential risk exposures.

Risk Mitigation:

  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure controls are in place, effective and evidenced appropriately by the control owners.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of business continuity plans (BCPs), disaster recovery plans (DRPs) and resiliency programs to ensure the Company is able to address and recover from risk events.

Policy and Procedure Development:

  • Assist the BLs’ and the support functions with their development, updating, and maintenance of operational risk management policies and procedures.
  • Ensure operational risk management policies and procedures are communicated and adhered to across the organization

Training and Awareness:

  • Conduct training and awareness sessions and workshops to promote a risk-aware culture within the organization.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff and management on risk management practices and principles.

Compliance and Regulatory Requirements:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Liaise and collaborate with the privacy and sanctions teams to ensure ongoing compliance
  • Where necessary and directed, liaise with regulatory bodies and external auditors on matters related to operational risk management.

Incident Management:

  • Lead investigations into material operational risk incidents and support the management team with their coordinated responses.
  • Ensure the Company resolves material incidents in a timely and effective manner and track the implementation of any corrective actions.
  • Maintain a register of corrective actions for risk committees.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in operational risk management within the finance/insurance industry
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance
  • Ability to analyze complex data and determine effective risk mitigation strategies
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) or similar.
  • Strong understanding of risk management frameworks, regulatory requirements (GDPR/Sanctions/PCI/etc), and industry standard processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in using risk management software and tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations and make sound decisions.
