Brief Overview of Position
Operational Risk is responsible for identifying, measuring, controlling, and monitoring operational risk, and providing early warning of risk indicators. Operational Risk reviews risks related to fraud, people and process risk, technology and systems risk, third-party, information security, data quality, model risk, and business continuity. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, the Operational Risk Executive leads the 2nd Line of Defense Operational Risk program and serves as a key contributor to the requirements and implementation of the bank’s global delivery. Broad range of regulatory operational risk subject matter expertise needed including; consumer, commercial. and investment banking.
Responsibilities
- Act as the operational risk leader, strategist and subject matter expert assessing and advising on existing and emerging regulatory requirements across the organization.
- Represent the state of Operational Risk to Executive Management, Regulators, and the Board of Directors
- Oversee the development and evolution of the Operational Risk Management framework and organization risk appetite changes.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with senior leaders, including executive management and related control groups to ensure a cohesive approach to risk management.
- Provide guidance, advice, and/or training to all lines of businesses (LOBs) to improve LOBs understanding of related laws and risk appetite.
- Supports key growth initiatives tied to the company’s strategic plan.
- Maintain strong professional relationships and open lines of communication with bank regulators, taking the lead in managing examinations and other ongoing regulatory interactions.
- Drive the company’s core operational risk processes including risk assessments and testing of relevant regulations, measurement and adherence to metrics, and lead all internal/external reporting on the overall state of Operational Risk.
- Collaborate with other risk stakeholders to proactively identify and assess risk inherent to their processes, assess their controls, and help mitigate the risk of potential business disruption, loss of revenue or reputation resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes/systems, human activities or external events.
- Effectively manage, motivate and develop a high performing team of professionals.
- Develop and maintain an environment that encourages all bank employees or contractors to report suspected fraud and other improprieties without fear of retaliation.
Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in Operational Risk in a financial services or banking environment.
- Master’s in Business Administration or equivalent graduate degree or relevant work experience required.
- Relevant senior management managerial experience having built, managed and lead a significant risk department/function for a $50B plus asset sized bank.
- Highly developed relationship management, negotiation and leadership skills and experience working with and presenting to leaders at all levels including Senior Executives, Managers, Auditors, Regulators, Board of Directors and related committees.
- Comprehensive industry and market knowledge with expertise in industry vertical or specialty
- Comprehensive understanding of bank products, services, operations and systems
- Ability to make/take calculated decisions and to think strategically and act accordingly.
- Expert ability to analyze and evaluate risks, escalate recommendations and influence change
- Knowledge of the latest financial, technology, and banking product innovations and regulations
- Maintain strong external network and market presence through active community leadership and relationship

- Investment Banking experience preferred.
