Practice Overview

Oliver Wyman’s Private Capital Practice advises leading private equity firms, principal investors, portfolio companies, and corporations across the investment and transaction lifecycle. We combine deep industry expertise, rigorous commercial analysis, and value creation capabilities to help clients make better investment decisions and deliver superior returns.

Our work spans commercial due diligence, investment and growth strategy, value creation, carve-outs, and deal-driven transformation. We support investors in assessing market attractiveness, competitive positioning, growth opportunities, and investment risks, and work with portfolio companies to translate these insights into tangible performance improvement.

Our teams work across sectors including Technology, Consumer and Retail, Telecommunications, Business Services, Transportation, Infrastructure, Industrials, Insurance, and Financial Services. In Japan, you will work with Japanese and international investors and corporations while collaborating closely with Oliver Wyman’s Private Capital and sector experts across Asia Pacific and globally.

What you will do

As a Principal in our Private Capital Practice, you will be a senior leader within the team, combining deep expertise with responsibility for client relationships, complex engagement delivery, business development, and the growth of our people and practice.

Principals are trusted advisors to senior clients and work closely with Partners to shape and deliver our most important engagements. You will bring an investor mindset to complex strategic and transaction questions, helping clients make high-stakes decisions and identify opportunities to create value throughout the investment lifecycle.

You will:

  • Lead complex Private Capital engagements across commercial due diligence, vendor due diligence, investment strategy, portfolio value creation, and other transaction-related situations, maintaining a clear focus on the issues that matter most to investment outcomes.

  • Shape the strategic direction of engagements, framing the critical questions, challenging investment hypotheses, identifying key sources of risk and upside, and ensuring our work translates into clear implications for investment and management decisions.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior clients, building relationships with private equity investment professionals, operating partners, portfolio company executives, corporate leaders, and other key stakeholders.

  • Oversee high-quality case execution, guiding teams through sophisticated quantitative and qualitative analyses, primary research, market assessment, competitive analysis, and synthesis while ensuring rigorous and timely delivery.

  • Translate insights into actionable recommendations, helping clients move from investment thesis to practical value creation priorities across growth, commercial effectiveness, operations, strategy, and transformation.

  • Communicate with impact at senior levels, leading executive discussions and presenting compelling perspectives to investment committees, boards, management teams, and other senior decision-makers.

  • Develop and expand client relationships, working alongside Partners to identify client needs, originate opportunities, shape proposals, and convert relationships into new and repeat engagements.

  • Contribute to the growth of our Private Capital franchise in Japan, identifying priority clients, sectors, and investment themes and helping shape how Oliver Wyman differentiates itself in the market.

  • Build distinctive intellectual capital and market perspectives, developing insights on emerging investment themes, sectors, and value creation opportunities that strengthen our client proposition and support business development.

  • Connect clients with the best of Oliver Wyman, bringing together relevant sector, functional, and geographic expertise from across Asia Pacific and our global network to address complex client needs.

  • Develop the next generation of talent, coaching and sponsoring consultants and managers, providing high-quality feedback, and helping build a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team.

  • Build your own external and internal profile, developing recognition as an expert in Private Capital and relevant sector or functional topics while contributing actively to the broader Oliver Wyman partnership.

Principals at Oliver Wyman are expected to demonstrate the capabilities and ambition to become future Partners of the firm, progressively taking greater ownership of client relationships, commercial development, intellectual leadership, and the growth of the practice.

What you will bring

  • Approximately 9-12 years of relevant professional experience, ideally gained within a leading strategy consulting firm or similarly rigorous, project-based environment.

  • Significant experience in Private Capital and transaction-related work, with a strong track record in commercial due diligence and ideally broader exposure to portfolio value creation, corporate strategy, M&A, or post-transaction transformation.

  • A demonstrated ability to lead complex engagements and multiple workstreams, providing direction to teams while maintaining quality and pace in demanding transaction environments.

  • Strong understanding of the private equity investment lifecycle and investor mindset, with the ability to identify the commercial factors that can materially affect an investment thesis, valuation, and potential returns.

  • A track record of developing trusted relationships with senior clients, with the credibility and judgement to challenge, influence, and advise senior executives and investment professionals.

  • Strong commercial instincts and business development capabilities, including the ability to identify client needs, shape compelling propositions, and contribute to developing new and expanded client opportunities.

  • Exceptional strategic problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, develop hypotheses, interpret complex information, and rapidly identify the insights that matter.

  • The ability to combine deep expertise with a broader commercial perspective, applying sector and/or functional knowledge to generate differentiated insights for clients.

  • Outstanding communication, synthesis, and executive presence, with confidence presenting recommendations and facilitating discussions with senior executives, investment committees, boards, and management teams.

  • Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing consulting teams, creating an environment in which colleagues can perform at their best and accelerate their development.

  • The ability and motivation to develop thought leadership and intellectual capital that strengthens Oliver Wyman’s market position and creates new conversations with clients.

  • An entrepreneurial mindset and enthusiasm for building and growing a business, particularly as Oliver Wyman continues to expand its Private Capital presence in Japan.

  • A strong academic record; an undergraduate degree is required, while an advanced degree such as an MBA or equivalent is welcomed but not essential.

  • Professional fluency in Japanese and English. For non-native Japanese speakers, JLPT N1 or equivalent business-level proficiency is expected.

  • Flexibility and willingness to travel depending on client and project requirements.
