Position Summary
The Obstetrician & Gynecologist (OB/GYN) at Essex County Correctional Facility, Newark NJ, 12 hours a week provides comprehensive medical care for female inmate-patients, including pregnancy management, childbirth, and diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of female reproductive health disorders. The OB/GYN ensures the delivery of high-quality care while supervising clinical staff and coordinating on-site and off-site healthcare services within correctional facilities.
Clinical Care
- Conduct thorough examinations of referred patients and provide individualized care.
- Manage prenatal, natal, and postnatal care, including emergency deliveries (natural or Cesarean).
- Diagnose, treat, and prevent reproductive system disorders and other female health conditions.
- Advise patients on diet, activity, hygiene, preventive care, and disease management.
- Utilize available on-site resources for patient care and make off-site referrals as appropriate.
- Provide emergency care and respond to urgent situations in a timely and professional manner.
- Document all patient encounters in a concise, accurate, legible, and timely manner using SOAP format.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all facility and HIPAA regulations.
Leadership & Supervision
- Serve as primary care physician for female inmates, coordinating on-site and off-site care needs.
- Supervise professional and paraprofessional clinical staff to ensure proper care delivery.
- Chair the Medical Audit Committee and participate in development of clinical protocols, policies, and disaster plans.
- Oversee the on-site quality assurance program, including infection control, medical audits, and review of inmate complaints.
- Monitor referrals to outside healthcare facilities for appropriateness, quality, and continuity of care.
- Monitor non-formulary medication utilization at the assigned facility.
- Serve as a clinical discussion leader and educator for staff training programs.
Administrative & Compliance
- Participate in screening, interviewing, and credentialing of healthcare providers.
- Ensure all physician documentation is complete, problem-oriented, signed, and compliant with regulatory standards.
- Notify administration of coverage changes and assist in arranging alternate coverage when unavailable.
- Represent the healthcare program in discussions with facility officials, civic groups, and visiting professionals.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation of the healthcare program.
Education & Experience
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
- Completed specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- Current, unrestricted medical license in the state of practice.
- CDS (Controlled Dangerous Substances) certification required.
- Prior experience in correctional healthcare or institutional healthcare preferred.
Certifications & Requirements
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Ability to adhere to security protocols and facility regulations.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
