Your engineering ingenuity, wonder & magic in defining external diagnostic usability will be instrumental in shaping the perception of Scout as a brand, as well as gaining peer admiration in the automotive industry.

  • Lead the definition of OBD requirements related to generic scan tool access and behavior for Scout’s software-defined vehicle architecture 
  • Create and maintain requirements for how external generic diagnostic tools interact with vehicle diagnostics, including readiness status, DTC readout, freeze frame data, monitor information, and service access behavior 
  • Define the expected behavior of the diagnostic system from the perspective of a generic scan tool user, ensuring consistency, transparency, and compliance across vehicle programs 
  • Act as the key interface between diagnostics, systems engineering, aftersales, service engineering, software development, and validation teams for all scan-tool-related requirements 
  • Ensure requirements are written in a clear, structured, and testable manner and are traceable from concept through implementation, validation, and release 
  • Align scan tool requirements with the new software architecture, including service-oriented communication paths, diagnostic gateways, central compute concepts, and domain responsibilities 
  • Support the definition of diagnostic data accessibility, naming conventions, response behavior, and robustness expectations for external service tools 
  • Work with test and validation teams to define acceptance criteria and test cases for scan tool compatibility, usability, and standardized diagnostic access 
  • Review software implementation concepts and diagnostic interface definitions to ensure external tool compatibility is maintained throughout development 
  • Support issue resolution by analyzing diagnostic traces, service logs, and tester interactions during prototype and serial development 
  • Partner with concept and architecture teams to build a future-proof and scalable diagnostic strategy for service and aftermarket interfaces 
  • Be involved in other related tasks / activities as required 

Location & Travel Expectations:

  • This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location in Novi, Michigan.
  • This role requires 4-5 days per week in the office, with regular in-person meetings and events. 
  • Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.

  • Relevant degree such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering, Technology, IT Systems, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university, preferably in electrical engineering, automotive engineering, or computer engineering  
  • 12+ years of experience in automotive diagnostics, diagnostic services, or requirements engineering, with strong knowledge of generic scan tool behavior and legislated OBD access  
  • Experience authoring and managing OBD requirements for external diagnostic tool compatibility, including support for generic scan tools, service tool access, and standardized diagnostic communication  
  • Strong understanding of legislated and customer-relevant diagnostic behaviors related to DTC visibility, monitor status, freeze frame access, readiness information, and serviceability 
  • Experience defining requirements in a modern software-defined vehicle architecture, including clear ownership boundaries between platform software, domain software, and diagnostic managers  
  • Familiarity with UDS, OBD service mapping, standardized scan tool interactions, and external tester compatibility  
  • Hands-on experience with requirements engineering tools such as Jama, DOORS, Polarion, and with validation / trace tools such as CANoe, CANalyzer, INCA, or similar  
  • Experience collaborating with software, systems, diagnostics, validation, aftersales, and service engineering teams to create scalable and user-oriented diagnostic requirements  
  • Ability to structure and write clear, testable, and traceable requirements for both internal development teams and external interface users  
  • Strong interpersonal skills including ownership, self-motivation, communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a truly cross-functional and global environment

Pay Transparency

This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.

Initial base salary range = $160,000.00 - $192,500.00
