About the role
The Category Development Manager is responsible for establishing and leading Category Development as a strategic capability from the ground up. The role designs the category development framework, defines ways of working, generates shopper and category insights (including shopper decision trees), and leads category projects with key customers to drive sustainable growth and shopper value.
This is a foundational role requiring strong strategic capability, analytical depth, and the ability to translate insights into commercial impact. The role builds and implements frameworks, governance, and standard processes, while developing templates, toolkits, and a shared category management language across functions and markets.
It establishes and owns shopper decision trees, translates shopper behaviour into actionable category strategies, and ensures insights are embedded into all recommendations.
As Category Development Manager you analyse market, POS, and consumer data to identify opportunities, define category roles and priorities, and develop clear “story behind the numbers” narratives. You also lead category projects with Primary customers, acts as a strategic partner in customer discussions, and develop customer-ready recommendations.
You will collaborate closely with Sales, Marketing and Product Line, driving adoption of category ways of working, define data requirements and KPIs, and continuously improve the quality and impact of category insights and recommendations. The role will require travelling in the Nordics and occasional European travels
Key responsibilities
- Build and implement a Category Development framework and define ways of working, governance, and standard processes.
- Develop consistent templates and toolkits and create a shared category management language and methodology.
- Establish and own shopper decision trees and translate shopper behaviour, needs, and missions into actionable category strategies.
- Identify, distil, and maintain key category insights and ensure shopper insights are embedded into all category strategies.
- Analyse market, POS, and consumer data, define category roles, objectives, and develop “story behind the numbers” narratives.
- Lead category development projects with Primary customers, act as a strategic partner, and develop customer-ready category recommendations.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in Category Development.
- Experience in Category Management & Commercial Insights.
- Proven track record of building or transforming category capabilities.
- Hands-on experience with shopper insights and decision tree development.
- Strong customer-facing experience with major retail partners.
- Advanced analytical, storytelling, and presentation skills.
- Preferably experience from white goods/electronics or from FMCG.
