Summary:
The Republican Herald in Pottsville, PA., seeks an experienced journalist to serve as a News Editor, editing daily and longer-term stories for the newspaper's website and print editions. We're looking for someone who can remain calm and collected - and make smart decisions - in high-stress, deadline situations. Come join our team!
Though most journalists currently work from home, the person hired for this position would be expected to relocate to Pottsville, PA.
What you will do:
- Coordinating and editing news coverage from Schuylkill County and surrounding communities
- Organize, edit and assign long-term enterprise and accountability journalism while also directing the reporting team to produce consistent and well-written breaking news and event coverage
- Direct reporters through breaking news situations and post accurate stories online quickly
- Contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
- Experiment with new digital tools and platforms
- Work closely with editors in adjacent markets on broader and locally compelling regional content
What you will bring:
- One to three years of journalism experience
- Relevant experience in news editing, reporting and writing, using social media, creating enterprising content
- Strong editing, writing, organizational and story structure skills
- Understanding of the imperatives of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile and print
- Experience working with web content-management systems and be well-versed in social media and search-engine optimization
- Ability to work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis as well as odd hours if necessary or if news requires
- A degree in journalism or communication, or equivalent experience
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
