New Product Development Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)
This internship is a unique opportunity to gain new product development experience. This role will report to & be mentored by a Senior New Product Development Engineer within Worthington Enterprises’ Building Products Innovation Team. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform hands-on mechanical experiments in a laboratory environment
- Perform reviews of scientific or industry literature
- Research and report back on developments in strategic technology areas, manufacturing techniques, and potential vendors
- Reverse engineer competitive products, patents, and technology
- Plan & develop new test methods or procedures with safety in mind
- Collect test data, analyze test results, create written test reports
- Coordinate product testing with external testing firms or laboratories when a specific test requires outside help
- Participate in new product design reviews and brainstorming sessions
- Design test fixtures, specimens, or prototypes using SolidWorks 2023 (2D drawings, 3D parts, & 3D assemblies)
- Participate in consumer insight activities with customers, end users, or industry experts
REQUIREMENTS:
- Current junior or senior working towards a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Must have reliable transportation; Mid-workday travel between laboratory location & corporate office location is required (3 miles), once daily maximum.
- Prior experience performing research of available literature
- Mechanical inclination and interest in hands-on problem solving, prototyping, and testing
- Prior experience safely using hand tools required
- Minimum of 3.0 GPA
- Able to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Capable of handling multiple assignments at once
- Able and interested in independent problem solving with moderate direction
- 2D & 3D CAD software experience (SolidWorks preferred)
- Prior engineering intern/coop experience required
