Do Epic Science
TAE is the world’s first private fusion energy company, founded in 1998 to commercialize the cleanest, safest, most affordable, and sustainable form of carbon-free power. We are applying science and engineering to design transformational technologies. Whether it's harnessing fusion through the science of stars, making exponential leaps in power efficiency, or innovating medical care with a novel cancer treatment: We're turning the promise of science into reality.
We’re looking for candidates who are passionate about realizing our mission: A future where all people have affordable access to reliable, abundant, and environmentally friendly fusion-generated electricity.
About The Role
We currently have an opening at our Foothill Ranch, CA (Orange County) facility for a Neutral Beams Experimental Scientist. The selected candidate will join the Neutral Beams team to operate and maintain a MW-level Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system for plasma heating and current drive, analyze and interpret experimental data related to beam performance, and interact with in-house technical staff on troubleshooting hardware issues. The candidate will also participate in the design, simulation, and testing of a new neutral beam system for the next generation fusion experiment at TAE.
- Conduct low temperature plasma experiments
- Study/optimize ion beam optics
- Development of the new NB for the future plasma machine: simulations – beam formation, transport; beam parameters experimental characterization, design NB systems together with the engineering team, carry out experiments to test NB subsystems.
- Development diagnostics for the high-power NB (Secondary electron emission detectors, calorimeters, optical diagnostics)
About You
- Minimum of 2 – 5 years with hands on lab experience with plasma physics, ion/neutral beams experiments
- Experience working in an experimental physics lab on neutral beams, ion accelerators, or related systems.
- Understanding of basic plasma and beam physic.
- High voltage systems (above 10 kV)
- UHV Vacuum systems
- Electronics assembly, soldering
- Electronics test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.)
- Basic hand and power tools
- Experience with Machine Control Systems interfaces
- Scientific programming (Python, Matlab, IDL, etc.)
- Mechanical and Thermal tensions
- Experience with MS Office Applications
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a challenging, dynamic environment
- Ability to cooperate and communicate well with engineering, physics/science, project management and procurement groups
- May require some shift work on evenings and weekends and/or being on-call for off-hour support
Education
- Required Education: MS in physics, engineering or related discipline
- Preferred Education: PhD in plasma physics, engineering or related discipline
