The role:

We are seeking an experienced Network Project Engineer specialising in Cisco LAN and Wireless infrastructure to design, implement, and support enterprise network solutions. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering network projects, including campus LAN, WLAN, switching, routing, network security, and wireless migrations, while ensuring high availability, performance, and compliance with customer requirements.

The Network Project Engineer is a hand on role and will be required to have an extensive technical background and experience in data networking, wireless and security products. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities in the areas of data networking, security and wireless ranging from scoping, design, product audits, site survey, installation, commissioning/decommissioning and producing all relevant project documentation for customers. This role is based in Wollongong from Monday to Friday onsite at customer’s premises within their Port Kembla steel plant. The network project engineer will work with DXC and customer project teams to implement and deliver quality outcomes, documentation and perform all required handover to the DXC BAU operational teams for ongoing support. Own personal vehicle is required to move around the plant with relevant customer permits.

The Network Support Engineer will also need to attend Change Approval Board (CAB) meetings, customer Technical Review Board (TRB) meetings for all project related network changes and where applicable, also attend onsite and remote conference calls and participate in key high priority incidents that may be related to project changes to provide updates both DXC Technology internal team and customer.The engineer may also be requested to participate in an after hours Level 2 network standby oncall roster from time to time upon manager’s discretion and/or for any technical escalation on certain key projects during handover or ‘hypercare’ periods within the scope of the project. Daily activities that are to be performed onsite at customer Steel plant at Port Kembla will require the necessary PPE (personal protective equipment) and completion of customer’s required site inductions and compliance to all site related processes and operating procedures.

Key accountabilities:

Service accountabilities

  • Design, implement, and support Cisco enterprise LAN and Wireless solutions.

  • Deliver network projects from planning and design through deployment and handover.

  • Configure and troubleshoot Cisco Catalyst switches, Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (9800 series), and Cisco access points.

  • Perform network upgrades, migrations, and technology refreshes.

  • Develop and maintain network design documentation, implementation plans, and as-built records.

  • Conduct site surveys, wireless coverage analysis, and performance optimisation.

  • Troubleshoot complex network issues across wired and wireless environments.

  • Collaborate with customers, project managers, vendors, and technical teams to ensure successful project outcomes.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers where required.

  • Work with staff/vendors to test problems and come up with solutions to fixes, patches etc.

  • Verify the conformity of all the equipment in the customer solution

  • Escalate issues to Vendors when required

  • Be Aware of all costs & tracking.  Adhere to the most economical solution in delivering services

  • Fully support & liaise with the account and project management team to meet all customer required deadlines under the scope of works

  • Ensure all customer acceptance tests are completed, and closed within the guidelines required, and that all documentation is forwarded to Customer Support upon handover

  • Work with the team to ensure successful installations are completed, and customer satisfaction is maintained

  • Complete a weekly summary report and timesheet indicating hours spent each week and submit to project managers, technical account managers and Service Delivery Manager.

EXPERIENCE

Critical

  • Strong experience with Cisco Catalyst switching, routing, and enterprise wireless solutions.

  • Proven experience delivering network infrastructure projects in enterprise environments.

  • Knowledge of technologies including VLANs, STP, EtherChannel, HSRP, OSPF, BGP, QoS, 802.1X, and Cisco DNA Center.

  • Experience with Cisco Catalyst 9000 series switches and Catalyst 9800 Wireless Controllers.

  • Understanding of network security principles and integration with firewall and NAC solutions.

  • Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation, network diagrams and customer-facing reports.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

  • Excellent oral, written and customer facing skills in English,

  • Good communication skills - Good customer facing experience.

Key Attributes

  • 5 years+ experience working with Cisco networking products in a project engagement is highly desirable

  • Experience in both IT and OT (Operational Technology) network, WLAN and any outdoor wireless products would be advantageous.

  • Customer-focused with excellent stakeholder management skills.

  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently or as part of a project team.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.

  • Able to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Cisco CCNP Enterprise (preferred).

  • Cisco CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure or Enterprise Wireless (highly regarded).

  • Diploma in Computer Science or Engineering highly desirable
