You use your telecommunications network skills and experience to contribute to specialist analysis, design, development and deployment in specific network technology domains, including how this technology inter-operates with other technologies.Job DescriptionRole PurposeThe Network Engineering Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, validating and supporting mobile network technologies to ensure Telstra delivers reliable, high-quality services to customers.
This role has a specialised focus on International Roaming (IREG) testing, ensuring seamless interoperability between Telstra’s mobile network and global partner networks through robust validation, certification, and test execution.
The role contributes to engineering excellence by applying telecommunications expertise, automation practices, and DevSecOps methodologies to improve network performance, reliability, and customer experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesInternational Roaming (IREG Testing)
- Execute and support end-to-end IREG (International Roaming) testing across voice, SMS, data, and emerging services (e.g. VoLTE, 5G roaming).
- Coordinate with international carrier partners to plan, schedule, and complete roaming test cases and validations.
- Validate roaming interoperability including: Network signalling (SS7 / Diameter / 5G SBA where applicable) Billing and charging scenarios Fraud and security controls
- Analyse test outcomes and identify defects, configuration gaps, or interoperability issues.
- Support certification and onboarding of new roaming partners to ensure compliance with Telstra and industry standards.
- Contribute to the design, integration, and testing of network platforms and services to meet business and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and execute test strategies, test cases, and automation frameworks to improve testing efficiency and coverage.
- Support troubleshooting of complex network and roaming issues, working across multiple domains and vendors.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, architects, and vendors to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Build and enhance test automation capabilities aligned with DevSecOps and CI/CD practices.
- Drive efficiency by creating repeatable testing patterns and reusable frameworks.
- Continuously review processes to improve speed, quality, and reliability of testing and delivery.
- Work closely with: International carriers and roaming partners Internal network engineering and operations teams Vendors supplying network platforms and solutions
- Assist in evaluating vendor capabilities and interoperability readiness for roaming services.
- Strong understanding of mobile core networks (3G/4G/5G) and roaming architecture
- Experience with IREG testing, roaming certification, or inter-operator testing
- Knowledge of: Signalling protocols (SS7, MAP, CAMEL, Diameter) IP networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, routing)
- Exposure to network testing tools, automation frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in complex telecom environments
- Ability to interpret test results and translate into actionable engineering outcomes
- Experience working in Agile / DevOps environments
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ensure successful completion of IREG testing and onboarding of roaming partners
- Maintain high standards of network quality, interoperability, and compliance
- Contribute to continuous improvement of testing frameworks and automation
- Support delivery of reliable and seamless international roaming customer experience

Skills Required
