The Role

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Architecture and a dotted line to the Director of Networking and Telecom, we are seeking an experienced, highly motivated Network Architect to join our growing, dynamic healthcare organization. The Network Architect will work with stakeholders, both leadership and subject matter experts, to build a holistic view of the organization's network. This position is responsible for designing, implementing the network infrastructure that supports mission-critical healthcare and payer applications, including Electronic Health Records (EHR), patient data management, business systems, and more across the Boston Medical Health System. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in designing enterprise-grade network infrastructures that are highly available, secure, and compliant, with a strong focus on performance, scalability, redundancy, and reliability.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Network Architecture Design: Design and implement secure, scalable, and high-performance network infrastructures for healthcare applications and services across the Boston Medical Center Health System.

  • Compliance and Security: Ensure all network solutions adhere to healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, HITRUST, NIST CSF, ISO27K and other privacy and security standards, including secure patient data transmission and network access control.

  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely across the health system with IT, information security, Infrastructure, application and business teams to integrate networking requirements for various healthcare applications and services.

  • Network Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitor network performance and make recommendations to improve efficiency, bandwidth, and network health.

  • Disaster Recovery and Redundancy Planning: Design and implement network disaster recovery plans, ensuring business continuity and data protection in case of outages or emergencies across the Boston Medical Center Health System.

  • Network Security: Designs and implements network security measures such as firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and encryption methods to safeguard healthcare and business data.

  • Data Flow and Integration: Architect and optimize data flow across healthcare and business applications traversing site-to-site VPNs, point-to-point circuits, internet circuits, and AWS Direct Connect, ensuring seamless integration between networks, cloud services, and on-premises systems across the health system.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Develop and maintain network architecture documentation, diagrams, policies, standards, and performance reports for auditing, compliance, and operational efficiency.

  • Innovation: Stay up to date with the latest trends and best practices in networking and broader healthcare technology.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field and a t least 8 years of experience in network architecture or network engineering, preferably with 3 or more years of focus on healthcare-related infrastructure; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience building and managing hardware and software solutions from Cisco, Palo Alto, F5, VMware NSX.

  • Experience with SD-WAN and cloud networking technologies (Aruba / Silver Peak, Cisco, Fortinet, Palo Alto, etc.).

  • Experience with border leaf and VXLAN / EVPN.

  • Experience with cloud networking and hybrid network architectures (e.g., AWS, Azure, VMware).

  • Strong experience with healthcare IT systems (e.g., EHR/EMR systems, medical devices, telemedicine infrastructure).

  • Experience with ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Active certifications in networking (Cisco Certified Network Professional [CCNP], Certified Information Systems Security Professional [CISSP], Certified Network Architect [CNA], etc.).

  • Active certifications in cloud networking and security (AWS Solutions Architect, AWS Advanced Networking Specialty, AWS Security Specialty).

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS PREFERRED:

  • N/A

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Expertise in designing secure, compliant, and scalable network infrastructures for large organizations.

  • In-depth knowledge of network protocols, routing and switching, firewalls, load-balancing, VPNs, SD-WAN, and related technologies.

  • Expertise with routing protocols in a complex, multi-site ecosystem: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP.

  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare compliance standards, including HIPAA, HITRUST, and other regulatory frameworks such as NIST CSF and ISO27K.

  • Proficiency with platform native and 3rd party network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, Zabbix).

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

  • Understanding of network-related involvement in DevOps based software development.

  • Familiarity with medical devices and IoT in healthcare settings.

  • Familiarity with modern platform visibility solutions (DataDog, Dynatrace, New Relic, Prometheus / Grafana).

  • Understanding of networking in virtualized environments (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
