The Role
Contribute to the fabrication of spin qubit devices using nanofabrication techniques, develop processes, and maintain equipment while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
Summary Generated by Built In
C12 develops quantum computers, to solve highly complex computing tasks, currently out of reach of even the most powerful supercomputers. Building a quantum computer still needs innovators ready to tackle exciting challenges. At C12 we are convinced that a new material for the qubit will bring a technological breakthrough.
At C12 Quantum Electronics, the fundamental building block of the quantum processor—a spin qubit—is constructed using ultra-pure carbon nanotubes suspended above a silicon chip with control electrodes and superconducting resonators. This high-purity material minimizes errors, enhances performance, and reduces hardware overhead for fault-tolerant computing. Spin qubits coupled to a microwave resonator offer exciting possibilities for control, manipulation, and circuit architecture. The suspended isotopically pure 12C nanotube significantly improves stability by reducing sources of decoherence, such as charge noise, nuclear spin noise, and phonon relaxation. Leveraging well-established semiconductor techniques, carbon nanotubes hold great promise for scaling quantum computing, much like silicon in classical computing.

Founded in 2020,C12 Quantum Electronics is a fast-growing start-up with its own cleanroom space in the center of Paris (Panthéon).

Your role at C12 Quantum Electronics

  • We are seeking a skilled Nanofabrication Engineer to contribute to the fabrication of spin qubit devices. These devices integrate superconducting resonators as well as normal and magnetic electrodes, serving as the foundation for the spin qubits based on carbon nanotubes

  • Key Responsibilities :
  • Fabricate spin-qubit devices through standard nanofabrication techniques
  • Develop and refine nanofabrication processes to achieve optimal performance
  • Establish and maintain precise control over fabrication parameters
  • Ensure high throughput and yield of devices on a wafer scale
  • Create, update, and maintain comprehensive documentation of fabrication processes
  • Log and analyse data to drive continuous improvements in fabrication
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment, taking full ownership of assigned tools

  • You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers in quantum physics, nanotechnology, and quantum information to develop C12’s hardware platform. This role involves tackling complex, long-term challenges in quantum engineering.

About you

  • Master’s degree + 4 years of work experience or PhD + 1 year of work experience in Nanotechnology or Nanoscience, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in nanofabrication in a cleanroom with a focus on: electron-beam lithography, plasma dry etching (ICP-RIE) and thin film deposition.
  • Experience with superconducting circuits is a plus
  • Attention to detail and the ability to execute a standard recipe accurately
  • Fluency in English is mandatory, as English is the official language used within C12

You should join us if...
You want to contribute to achieve landmark results in quantum computing and participate in setting up the world-first architecture of a five-qubit chip with all-to-all connectivity between spin qubits, making a difference in the emerging quantum technologies
You want to work within a 50-people team with various backgrounds in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and software engineering to create a revolutionary quantum computing processor
You want to thrive in an exceptional scientific environment with several industrial and academic partners.
You share our values (excellence, scientific integrity, diversity, curiosity, and care) and want to help us define our product-focused culture  and ambition to accelerate.

C12’s unique technology
At C12, a qubit, the fundamental functional unit of a quantum computer, is built from an isotopically ultra-pure 12C nanotube suspended above a silicon chip containing control electrodes and a quantum communication bus. Our spin qubits hold great promise in terms of individual control and manipulation as well as for the circuit architecture. A suspended isotopically-pure 12C nanotube holds great promise in terms of stability, as it reduces all sources of decoherence (charge noise, nuclear spin noise and phonon relaxation).

C12 encourages all who feel qualified to apply. Recruitment decisions are based solely on qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience. Applications from women are particularly welcomed.

What We Do

C12 is building reliable quantum computers.

The company is a spin-off from ENS launched in January 2020 by twin brothers Matthieu and Pierre Desjardins to supercharge the development of the lab’s promising new quantum technology.

Quantum computing has the potential to change our lives. But frequent errors limit the technology’s viability. We are tackling the fundamental issue: the nature of the hardware itself. We are tapping into the simplest material–carbon–to drive a technological breakthrough in the field. Unlike other quantum computers, we use carbon nanotubes as the fundamental building block of our processor. By combining the power of an ultra-pure material with an easy-to-manufacture semiconductor device, we are building a scalable platform for quantum computing.

Our executive co-founders bring a unique combination of scientific excellence and business skills to the company. Our team is made up of the world’s most accomplished experts in quantum electronics and carbon nanotube science. Our scientific advisors are renowned scientists and pioneers in spin qubits: Dr. Takis Kontos, Dr. Matthieu Delbecq and Dr. Jérémie Viennot.

In June 2021, C12 secured a $10 million seed round with funding from 360 Capital, Bpifrance (Digital Venture Fund), Airbus Ventures, BNP Paribas Développement, and Octave Klaba (OVHcloud), and additional grants from Bpifrance and the Ile-de-France Region.

We are leading quantum’s next material breakthrough, and we are just getting started. Silicon enabled the emergence of classical computing – it’s time for carbon to do the same for quantum !
