We are the Digital Services team within Customer Service Technology under eBay’s Global Technology Organization. We own the end-to-end online customer service experience across web and native mobile, helping millions of buyers and sellers get fast, effective help every day.

Our mission is to keep members in-journey and resolve issues through intuitive, compliant self-service experiences, driving high containment and deflection, lower customer effort (CES), and reduced assisted contact. We design and build the experiences that enable customers to quickly find answers, resolve issues through self-service, and get support when needed. . Partnering closely with Product, Design, Data, and Platform teams, we deliver intuitive, reliable, and scalable solutions that improve the end-to-end customer service journey. 

Our engineers work across backend services, APIs, frontend applications, and platform integrations using a modern, diverse tech stack that includes Java, Node.js, web services, native iOS and Android, and a variety of data stores such as NoSQL and Oracle, with a strong focus on quality, observability, and collaboration in a highly distributed environment.

This role is ideal for a senior engineer who combines deep backend expertise with strong technical leadership and full stack versatility. While the primary focus will be backend architecture, services, APIs, and platform integrations, this person will also contribute across the stack when needed and serve as the technical lead for the team.

• Translate product and business requirements into scalable software designs and deliver clean, efficient, extensible, and maintainable code.

• Own the design, development, testing, and deployment of backend services, APIs, integrations, and distributed systems that power customer self-service experiences across web and mobile surfaces.

• Design highly scalable, resilient, secure, and performant backend systems that support Help and Contact experiences used by millions of customers.

• Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and Platform teams to deliver innovative, end-to-end solutions aligned with business goals and customer needs.

• Contribute to full stack development as needed, including frontend integrations and end-to-end solution design, to support flawless customer experiences.

• Raise the team’s engineering standards through code reviews, design reviews, architecture guidance, technical mentoring, and the promotion of standards across the team.

• Identify gaps and systemic issues, propose practical solutions, and help shape the engineering roadmap and technical priorities for the team.

• Improve team productivity by seeing opportunities for better tooling, reusable frameworks, development processes, and platform improvements.

• Ensure systems are testable, high-quality, observable, secure, and continuously deliverable through strong engineering and operational practices.

• Support production systems through release management, debugging, monitoring, incident response, and on-call responsibilities for an always-on 24/7 site.

• 7+ years of software development experience with strong computer science fundamentals and problem-solving skills.

• Deep expertise in Java (Spring / Spring Boot) and/or Python, with experience building scalable APIs using REST and GraphQL.

• Full stack experience, including familiarity with frontend technologies such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, React, Marko, and modern web development frameworks.

• 2+ years of experience designing and developing AI/ML-based applications.

• Hands-on experience building or integrating AI-powered applications, including working with large language models, prompts, and evaluation/monitoring of AI features.

• Strong expertise in Event Processing (Kafka, JMS, or MQ) 

• Experience acting as a technical lead, mentoring engineers, driving design reviews, and influencing engineering best practices across a team.

• Strong understanding of distributed systems, service integration patterns, scalability, reliability, observability, security, and performance optimization.

• Solid understanding of databases and data access patterns, including Oracle, NoSQL, and modern API/query patterns.

• Familiarity with Agile development, CI/CD pipelines, Git, testing strategies, and modern engineering best practices.

• Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., code generation, test automation, code review aids) to improve productivity and code quality.
