Position Summary:

The MSK Sonographer performs musculoskeletal ultrasound exams under physician supervision to produce high-quality diagnostic images that assist in patient evaluation and treatment. This role is responsible for preparing exam rooms, operating and maintaining ultrasound equipment, ensuring patient comfort and safety, and accurately documenting exam details in accordance with ARA and ARDMS standards. The position is full-time and on-site within ARA offices, with regular hours Monday through Thursday, averaging 36-40 hours per week. The MSK Sonographer reports to the Lead MSK Sonographer and the Director of Radiology.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

• Perform diagnostic musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound exams in accordance with physician orders, established protocols, and ARA quality standards.
• Prepare exam rooms and ultrasound equipment in compliance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety policies.
• Review patient medical history and clinical information to ensure exam appropriateness and accuracy before imaging.
• Position and assist patients properly, using safe body mechanics and ergonomic scanning techniques to ensure comfort, safety, and optimal image quality.
• Apply sound judgment and critical thinking during examinations to capture accurate anatomical and pathological information for physician interpretation.
• Document exam details, maintain accurate patient records, and generate preliminary reports for review by the interpreting physician.
• Perform quality control checks and basic maintenance on ultrasound equipment; promptly report and document any malfunctions or performance issues.
• Ensure all patient information and imaging data are accurately stored and transmitted in the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
• Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and ARA policies regarding patient confidentiality, safety, and ethical conduct.
• Demonstrate proficiency with computer systems and software used for documentation and communication, including PACS, electronic health record (EHR), and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams).

Qualifications:

• Completion of an accredited Ultrasonography program approved by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
• Current ARDMS or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification in Sonography.
• Registered Musculoskeletal Sonographer (RMSKS) credentialing preferred.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in diagnostic sonography, preferably with some focus in musculoskeletal imaging.
• Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and technical skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Proficient typing and documentation skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Experience using EHR and PACS.

Working Conditions / Other:

• This is a full-time, on-site position based within ARA offices, with travel required across assigned offices in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
• Work hours are daytime, Monday through Thursday.
• Requires manual dexterity, visual acuity, and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate and maintain ultrasound equipment and computer.
• Involves frequent standing, walking, and positioning of patients throughout the day.
• Requires the ability to lift and move equipment or patients weighing up to 50 pounds, and to assist patients with limited mobility, including those who are wheelchair-bound.
• Includes periods of sitting and repetitive hand movements during imaging procedures.
• Requires physical stamina to sustain scanning activities for extended periods while maintaining proper ergonomic posture.
• Exposure to bodily fluids and typical medical office conditions may occur.
