JOB SUMMARY
The Molecular Genetics Technologist I conducts high-complexity molecular testing for genetic diseases, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and laboratory protocols. Working under direct supervision, this entry-level role performs routine laboratory assays with accuracy and consistency, supports operational continuity within assigned workflows, performs quality control and routine maintenance activities, and promptly escalates non-routine results, deviations, or operational issues to senior staff or supervisors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine clinical testing and assays in accordance with validated SOPs and applicable regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, NY).
- Prepare reagents, controls, and calibrators; perform instrument setup and maintain proper laboratory stock levels.
- Accurately document test results and activities in LIMS and laboratory records.
- Conduct quality control (QC) checks, monitor assay performance, and report deviations or issues to supervisors.
- Troubleshoot assay and instrument issues under guidance and escalate non-routine results, errors, or workflow concerns promptly.
- Perform and document routine equipment maintenance, calibration, and preventive maintenance per SOP; place equipment out of service when performance is out of specification.
- Initiate and document corrective actions for QC failures, instrument malfunctions, specimen discrepancies, and other nonconformances.
- Adhere to laboratory safety, contamination control, biohazard protocols, and 5S standards.
- Support operational continuity by maintaining organized workflows and adapting to changing priorities.
- Participate in training, competency assessments, proficiency testing, and assist in training new employees as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related life science field required.
- 1+ years of relevant laboratory experience.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and testing workflows.
Preferred
- Prior clinical lab experience preferred but not required
- MB(ASCP) or MT(ASCP).
