Readers come to our conversation spaces looking to participate in an informed and thoughtful debate on the most important news facing the world today. Our goal is to support a civil conversation that is open to readers of all points of view.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable reading hundreds of audience comments each day and making objective decisions quickly about whether these comments meet our guidelines for publication. Most comments will be pre-screened by an AI filter but require human review. You should have a judicious eye, a passion for community building and some experience with online discussion groups as a manager or contributor.

You will:

  • Reply to reader inquiries about moderation decisions

  • Develop best practices to promote positive behavior and encourage reader participation

  • Collaborate with teammates on moderation guidelines

  • Watch the homepage for breaking news that should be open to conversation

  • Provide quality assurance for comments sections that have already been moderated

You have:

  • Superb judgment in moderating comments

  • Prior experience moderating or facilitating online communities or discussion groups

  • A strong, demonstrable passion in journalism and the news of the day

  • Outstanding communication and time management skills

  • Enthusiasm about shaping the future of reader engagement and online communities at The Journal

  • Flexibility around working hours. This position will require evening and weekend work because we have to be responsive and active online when our audience is online.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred

Remote applicants will be accepted, as this can help us meet our commenters’ needs 24/7. This position will report to the Deputy Editor, New Audiences & Community.

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter.

The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards.
