Job Description

Albemarle is seeking an experienced mine safety leader for the Kings Mountain, NC site to support a multidisciplinary team in reopening a brownfield site for spodumene concentrate production. This role is crucial in building, implementing, maintaining, and enhancing the safety component of the HSE management system, including surveying, drilling, sample collection, and monitoring water and air quality. The successful candidate will work closely with the Lithium Resources Management team and site operational staff to ensure world-class safety outcomes.

The position involves managing the development, rollout, training, and monitoring of brownfield site safety plans to transition from OSHA to MSHA oversight. The candidate will be accountable for the regular review of the site Process Safety Management Plan and the coordination of work packages to achieve its objectives. Reporting to the Site Safety Manager, the Mine Safety Lead will have a Safety Lead role reporting directly, along with external safety supervision.

The Mine Safety Lead will champion a proactive safety culture across all mining operations, directly supporting mine teams by embedding safety into daily activities, operational planning, and strategic initiatives. This role involves hands-on engagement to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and continuously improve safety performance. The Mine Safety Lead will conduct infield audits, risk assessments, and training sessions tailored to the unique challenges of mining environments. Collaborating with engineering, operations, and environmental teams, the Mine Safety Lead will integrate safety into project planning and execution as a visible and integral part of Albemarle’s mining operations.

What You Will Do

  • Communicate with site, regional, and global safety leaders regularly.
  • Manage safety strategy for large projects to ensure compliance.
  • Oversee safety through all project phases from studies to operation.
  • Develop and implement Process Safety Management strategies for brownfield sites; manage OSHA to MSHA transition.
  • Supervise mine safety operations, deploy safety systems, conduct audits, and report on compliance.
  • Inspect worksites and perform audits.
  • Integrate industrial hygiene into daily tasks and monitor compliance.
  • Create and update MSHA-compliant safety standards.
  • Apply mining safety expertise to Albemarle values and practices.
  • Ensure adherence to MSHA regulations and company guidelines.
  • Act as Kings Mountain mining safety expert.
  • Conduct internal, external, and infield safety audits.
  • Provide MSHA safety training.
  • Promote and enforce Albemarle’s Life Saving Rules.
  • Lead safety investigations and improvement projects.
  • Launch safety initiatives and build a safety-focused culture.
  • Perform field inspections, audits, and risk assessments for hazards.
  • Develop and deliver MSHA-aligned training.
  • Mentor and coach field personnel on safety.
  • Prepare accurate safety documentation and reports.
  • Represent the safety department in meetings and public events.
  • Collaborate with teams to enhance safety.
  • Update safety records for regulatory compliance.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

What You Bring

Required:

  • Holds or is eligible for a Blue Card with MSHA mining experience.
  • Competent in OSHA and MSHA compliance.
  • Possesses safety compliance auditing experience.
  • Has expert knowledge on mine safety standards.
  • Able to manage multiple activities with varying priorities.
  • Experienced in developing and enhancing safety systems and procedures.
  • Demonstrates leadership in field safety culture.
  • Manage documentation for concurrent projects.
  • Maintains strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Proficient in technical writing.
  • Capable of public speaking and presenting information.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Functions effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Utilizes analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Works efficiently with all levels of management, internal and external stakeholders, and corporate personnel.
  • Possesses experience in industrial hygiene, including noise and air quality monitoring tools.
  • Revise, develop, and implement HSE procedures; lead cross-organizational initiatives.

Preferred:

  • 7 years’ experience in mine safety and leadership skills.
  • Associate degree or higher in a related field of education
  • Skilled in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Developed and implemented safety management systems.
  • Ability to coach and motivate others to work safely and in alignment with Albemarle’s safety management system.
