POSITION LOCATION:  San Carlos, CA; Austin, TX; or Remote, USA

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Natera is seeking a skilled, self-motivated Engineering Manager to lead a global software development team in the intake domain in a fast-growing biotech company.

 

In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of cutting-edge testing in the fields of oncology, reproductive and women’s health, and organ health.  You will work with a team dedicated to advancing our revolutionary healthcare initiatives. You will build, develop, and nurture a distributed remote-first engineering team, orchestrate project management activities, and facilitate clear and effective communication across all levels.

 

We are seeking a candidate who possesses exceptional leadership and team-building skills, strong technical acumen, a passion for innovation, and the ability to thrive in a complex environment. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead 

    • Provide technical leadership for a software development team, US-based and international, to ensure on-time, on-budget development of high quality software

    • Lead technical and architectural design activities

    • Develop implementation strategy

    • Establish and encourage best engineering practices

  • Manage 

    • Manage multiple ongoing projects

    • Identify project objectives, the scope of software deliverables, external dependencies, resources, risks, and framework for the project activities.

    • Facilitate collaboration and resolve issues, evaluate project performance, bring projects to delivery, and act on the lessons learned

    • Lead team meetings and Agile rituals, such as stand-ups, retrospectives, and planning sessions

    • Provide formal oversight for regulated software development activities

  • Nurture 

    • Guide the career development of team members, nurture their technical and interpersonal skills

    • Provide individual performance feedback focused on recognition of achievement and opportunities for growth

    • Care for the wellbeing of the team and individuals on the team

    • Conduct 1:1s, performance evaluations, and more

  • Collaborate 

    • Build and maintain ongoing strong working relationships with stakeholders and users, focus on building effective communication channels

    • Oversee collaboration among cross-functional development teams, software quality engineers, and product managers

  • Effect change 

    • Provide feedback to management and initiate change to optimize software development processes with focus on quality, innovation, and efficient product delivery

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience

  • 2+ years of proven track record of building and managing high performance engineering teams

  • 5+ years of experience in software development using Java or similar languages

  • Experience in biotech or another regulated industry a strong plus

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Passion for people management and mentorship

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proven record of managing highly effective engineering teams

  • Willingness and ability to manage global teams across multiple time zones

  • Commitment to recruiting strong and diverse talent

  • Strong experience in mentoring developers, seeking out opportunities and providing guidance for engineers to grow and excel

  • Excellent project management skills in Agile environments

  • Coding, software design, and architecture skills

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate effectively with reports, peers, and stakeholders

  • Expertise in building enterprise applications using Java or similar languages

  • Expertise in building scalable distributed systems

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
