Position Overview

The Metrology Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining dimensional inspection programs that support production, and for serving as the organization's Tooling Engineer with ownership of engineered tooling and fixtures throughout their lifecycle. In the metrology capacity, this role creates and refines inspection programs for production and fulfills special measurement requests from Engineering and R&D. In the tooling capacity, this role is accountable for the tracking, surveillance, and controlled release of engineered tooling and fixtures. Working in partnership with the Lead Metrology Inspector, Quality, Engineering, and R&D, the position ensures that measurement systems and tooling are accurate, capable, controlled, and ready to support manufacturing. Success requires strong metrology and programming expertise, sound engineering judgment, and disciplined configuration and lifecycle management of tooling assets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, validate, and maintain dimensional inspection programs (CMM, 3D scanning, and related metrology systems) to support production

  • Create and optimize inspection routines and measurement strategies from CAD models, engineering drawings, and GD&T requirements

  • Support the Lead Metrology Inspector and inspection team by supplying production-ready inspection programs and measurement methods

  • Fulfill special measurement and inspection requests from Engineering and R&D, including prototype, first-off, and investigative studies

  • Perform measurement system analysis (MSA/Gage R&R) and drive measurement uncertainty and repeatability improvements

  • Analyze measurement data, generate inspection reports, and communicate dimensional deviations and nonconformances

  • Serve as the Tooling Engineer responsible for engineered tooling and fixtures across their full lifecycle

  • Track and maintain the tooling and fixture inventory, including identification, status, location, and configuration control

  • Conduct surveillance of tooling and fixtures, including periodic verification, condition monitoring, and calibration/requalification scheduling

  • Manage the controlled release of engineered tooling and fixtures to production, ensuring validation and documentation are complete before use

  • Maintain tooling and fixture documentation, revision history, and records in accordance with quality and configuration-management requirements

  • Coordinate design, procurement, build, and rework of tooling and fixtures with Engineering, R&D, and suppliers

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Quality, Engineering, R&D, and Production to resolve dimensional and tooling issues

  • Ensure compliance with internal quality procedures, metrology standards, and tooling control requirements

  • Drive continuous improvement in inspection programming, measurement accuracy, and tooling reliability

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related technical field preferred, but not required

  • Hands-on experience programming CMMs and/or 3D scanning systems (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso, Polyworks, or similar)

  • Strong proficiency interpreting CAD models, engineering drawings, and GD&T

  • Experience with measurement system analysis (MSA/Gage R&R) and dimensional data analysis

  • Experience designing, specifying, or managing tooling and fixtures

  • Familiarity with tooling lifecycle control, including tracking, surveillance, calibration/requalification, and release processes

  • Understanding of configuration management, revision control, and quality documentation practices

  • Knowledge of vehicle systems and assemblies is preferred

  • Ability to generate clear, detailed inspection and engineering reports

  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills

Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

  • Occasional standing and walking within the office

  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment

  • Visual acuity to read screens, documents, and reports

  • Occasional reaching, bending, or stooping to access file drawers, cabinets, or office supplies
