The Role:

Metallurgist I is an Early-Career role supporting aerospace investment casting manufacturing through metallurgical laboratory activities and validations across the production process. The metallurgical team is responsible for a variety of tests and validations covering the alloys used to produce castings, the castings themselves, as well as the materials used to produce the cast components. 

  • Perform Sample Preparation: Cutting, Etching, Mounting & Polishing
  • Sample Reading & Evaluation Using Lab Available Equipment (Primarily Optical Microscope)
  • Report and Certification Preparation
  • Ownership of Test Bar Production, Process Specifics and Process Routing
  • Preparation of Shipment and Documentation Packages for Outside Laboratory Testing
  • Interpret and Apply Customer & Industry Specifications to Testing Procedures, Results & Reporting, and Other Evaluations & Approvals
  • Involvement in Troubleshooting Production Issues, Especially as Issues Pertain to Alloy Microstructure, Chemistry or Mechanical Characteristics

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering (or Equivalent Curriculum) or Equivalent Professional Experience
  • Basic knowledge of the Investment Casting Process (and Especially Nickel-Based Superalloys) is Preferred but not Required
  • Understand the Fundamentals of Materials, especially Metal Microstructure
  • Familiar with Fundamentals of Metal Microstructure Formation & Phase Evolution
  • Performed Sample Preparation, Mount Reading & Reporting
  • Familiar with Mechanical Testing Processes, Evaluation and Reporting.
  • Effective Communication, Collaboration, and Analytical Skills

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering or equivalent professional experience
