Position Summary
Wunderlich-Malec Engineering (WM) is seeking a Mechatronics Engineer to support the design, implementation, commissioning, and ongoing optimization of industrial automation systems. This role is responsible for developing and supporting manufacturing equipment that incorporates PLCs, robotics, motion control, industrial networks, machine vision and other advanced automation technologies.
Working closely with engineering teams, customers, and manufacturing personnel, the successful candidate will troubleshoot existing equipment, develop automation solutions, improve system performance, and support projects from concept through startup.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, integrate, and support automated manufacturing equipment and control systems. Example applications: fabrication, welding, painting, assembly, material handling, and testing applications
- Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs, HMI applications, robotic systems, machine vision, and related automation hardware to improve system performance and reliability
- Assist with equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and validation while ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently
- Create and maintain engineering documentation including electrical schematics, control narratives, equipment manuals, spare parts lists, software backups, maintenance PM schedules, and operating procedures (SOP’s)
- Evaluate existing manufacturing systems and recommend automation upgrades that improve productivity, quality, equipment reliability, and data collection capabilities
- Partner with cross-functional teams to identify process improvements and implement automation solutions that support operational objectives
- Provide technical support for production equipment by diagnosing electrical, controls, robotic, and automation-related issues while implementing corrective actions
- Participate in capital improvement projects by assisting with project planning, equipment selection, budgeting, scheduling, and implementation
- Monitor project progress, communicate milestones, and provide regular updates to project stakeholders
- Mentor technicians and junior engineers by providing technical guidance and sharing automation best practices
- Deliver formal and informal training to operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel on automated equipment and control systems
- Remain current on advancements in industrial automation, robotics, controls, and manufacturing technologies to identify opportunities for continuous improvement
- Ensure automation solutions comply with applicable electrical, safety, and industry standards (NFPA 70, NEC)
Minimum Qualifications
Education Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Experience Minimum of two (2) years of experience designing, integrating, programming, or supporting industrial automation systems.
Required Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, control panels, electrical wiring, and machine controls
- Experience troubleshooting PLC-based automation systems and industrial control equipment
- Familiarity with AC and servo motor systems, variable frequency drives, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and electromechanical controls
- Understanding of industrial automation safety standards and applicable electrical codes (NFPA 70, NEC)
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to analyze and resolve equipment issues
- Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours when required to support equipment startup or production needs
- Valid driver's license and passport with the ability to travel up to 30%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience programming or supporting Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) PLCs and HMI platforms (Factory Talk View, Wonderware)
- Experience with industrial robots and cobots such as FANUC, KUKA, ABB, or similar robotic systems
- Knowledge of Ladder Logic programming, Function Block programming, and industrial communication protocols: Ethernet IP, MODBUS, PROFINET, Serial (RS-232)
- Experience using engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Creo, Windchill, or equivalent CAD platforms
- Experience with utilizing and integrating machine vision using COGNEX, Keyence, or other vision platforms
- Experience working in plant environments and supporting any of the following industries: food and beverage, oil and gas, data centers, chemical, mining, power generation and distribution
- Proven troubleshooting skills in the field: electrical, mechanical, programming, and networking
- Proven track record of successful installs and startups in the field. Proven ability to deliver on projects and make timelines
Physical Demands of Position Seeing, color perception, hearing and clear speech, dexterity in hands, driving, lifting, climbing, and ability to mount and dismount equipment, pushing, and pulling.
Working Environment Standard office environment, On-site office environment, and diverse industrial environments. Frequent PC usage, facsimile/copy machines, phones.
