Inside the RoleThis position, within Engine and Aftertreatment Engineering, will be located in Detroit, MI at the heart of Daimler Truck North America powertrain development. As we actively work to advance all heavy-duty propulsion systems into the future, compliance remains fundamental to our powertrain development culture. This position will provide critical technical development in the area of on-board diagnostics development and validation. Working within a cross-functional team of thermodynamic, aftertreatment system, vehicle testing, data science and regulatory affairs experts, this role will focus on ensuring engine OBD requirements are fulfilled.

What You Drive at DTNA
- Understand and interpret emissions and OBD regulations in context of how the requirements will be fulfilled by Detroit engines and aftertreatments sold in the U.S. and abroad
- Define requirements for diagnostic monitoring strategies based on the interpretation of the OBD regulations
- Effectively collaborate within a cross-functional team to ensure the various requirements and boundary conditions are fully understood and maintained
- Create and optimize diagnostic algorithms used to monitor engine emissions control systems and electric powertrains as required by the OBD regulations
- Create, maintain, and/or execute test plans, and lead related activities, to fulfill requirements contained within the diagnostic monitor Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R)
- Calibrate OBD monitors to meet targets dictated by CARB OBD regulations and by Daimler Truck internal performance criteria
- Assess monitor performance by reviewing data gathered from performance test cells, engineering test vehicles, and other sources
- Optimize diagnostic strategies through simulation and analysis activities
- Participate in local and global design reviews of diagnostic system features related to the monitoring strategy of the emissions control system.
- Focus on continuously improving methods, tools, process, etc. used regularly on the job
- Analyze data, draw conclusions, and provide recommendations of technical results to the management team.
- Communicate effectively and maintain professional/social interaction in a multi-cultural and international environment.
- Continuously improve knowledge and skills through training and self-development.
- Perform other activities as necessary and/or assigned.
Knowledge You Should Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- 3-4 years relevant industry experience with specialization in conventional and alternative automotive powertrains.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in developing and integrating diesel engine and aftertreatment controls and/or On-Board Diagnostic monitors
- Experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems
- Experience applying relevant Engineering concepts and tools
- Demonstrated knowledge with calibration and analysis tools (MARC, CRETA, Matlab, & Simulink)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong PC skills including MS Office and database tools.Required proficiency in English language skills including strong oral and written communication skills.
Exceptional Candidates Might Have
- Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- 4+ years knowledge of conventional and electric mobility heavy-duty powertrain systems.
- Proficiency in English and German language skills including strong oral and written communication skills.
- 3+ years' experience in developing and integrating diesel engine and aftertreatment controls and/or On-Board Diagnostic monitors
- Advance level of understanding of Diesel Engine and Aftertreatment Operation
