Job Description:
The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading a team of engineers while performing advanced engineering work related to the design, development, and modification of complex machinery, systems, and components. This role ensures designs meet performance expectations, manufacturing feasibility, cost targets, and operational requirements. The position also serves as a key technical resource across cross-functional teams and plays a critical role in driving innovation, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Design
- Lead the design and alteration of highly complex machines, systems, and components
- Analyze and validate designs for performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness
- Develop and maintain:
- Detailed design layouts and drawings
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Inspection specifications and engineering documentation
- Evaluate designs and implement necessary engineering changes and improvements
- Prepare sketches, estimates, and technical descriptions for leadership review and approval
Project & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate design activities with:
- Manufacturing
- Tooling
- Material planning
- Assembly and installation teams
- Manage and maintain project files and engineering documentation
- Direct preparation of production, installation, and assembly drawings
- Provide technical guidance to field teams and support product implementation
Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement
- Act as a technical consultant to manufacturing and assembly teams
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of production issues
- Conduct performance testing and investigations to improve product design and manufacturing processes
- Observe products in operation to gather data for design improvements
- Develop initial operating instructions and service recommendations for new products
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of engineers and technical professionals
- Plan and assign work, ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines
- Monitor progress and provide feedback on performance and deliverables
- Assist in evaluating team members and supporting their professional development
- May act as a direct supervisor and assume departmental leadership responsibilities when needed
Operational Support
- Diagnose defective work and implement corrective actions
- Support daily departmental operations as requested by leadership
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum of 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably in machinery or equipment design
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams or projects
