Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

BNL has an immediate opening for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the efforts to design and build BNL’s new Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).  In this role, you will have opportunities to work with a team of engineers and scientists on a wide range of mechanical components, systems, and equipment.  This will include items such as large and small static and dynamic structures, lifting and positioning fixtures, high voltage and high current magnetic and electrostatic devices, Radio Frequency (RF) accelerator cavities and components, vacuum components, cryogenic components, and water/air cooled systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop mechanical components and systems from initial concept through final design.
  • Perform engineering analysis using FEA and hand calculations for design validation.
  • Prepare component Specifications and Statement of Work (SOW) for procurement.
  • Oversee component procurement, fabrication, assembly, testing and installation.
  • Manage engineering projects, and develop project plans including schedules, needed resources, and budgets.
  • Prepare design reviews and presentations.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with scientific, engineering, and technical staff.
  • Provide engineering advice and direction in areas of expertise.
  • May oversee and coordinate a variety of technical staff for design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.
