Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer position is meant to build the foundation of knowledge and experience related to the design and development of Colt products.  In this role the Mechanical Engineer shall take extreme ownership in the effort to perform engineering tasks as assigned for firearm products and accessories across the full lifecycle—from concept through production. This role involves supporting prototype development, sustainment engineering activities, conducting engineering analysis, conducting test cycles, and presenting design reviews under the guidance of a more experienced engineer. Will be responsible for ensuring all assigned products meet stringent safety, functionality, and durability standards while conforming to the specifications set forth by customer specific requirements or internal requirements provided by product management.

 

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Perform engineering tasks as assigned to support development, testing, and sustainment of firearm products and accessories, from concept through production.
  • Participate in prototype fabrication and testing; analyze results to refine designs and produce detailed, professional test reports.
  • With guidance, conduct engineering analyses and simulations to optimize performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Utilize 3D CAD software (PTC CREO) to develop models and maintain comprehensive engineering drawings, specifications, and documentation.
  • Ensure all designs meet rigorous safety, functionality, and durability standards.
  • Stay current with advancements in firearm technology, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Perform and document Design FMEAs for components, sub-assemblies, and assemblies as assigned.
  • Own and manage RAID logs, tracking Risks, Actions, Issues, and Decisions throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Design responsibilities may include working on revolvers, 1911s, rifles, and future product lines across both commercial and military/defense markets.
  • Responsible for supporting the creation of Technical Data Packages to include all drawings and technical documents related to the manufacture, assembly, and maintenance of Colt Products.
  • Must contribute to technical documents and manuals to facilitate sales and marketing efforts.

Strategic & Cross-Functional Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of test documentation suitable for presentation during high-level negotiations and formal engagements with military clients, regulatory agencies, and professional customers.
  • Conduct patent research and competitive analysis to ensure new designs do not infringe on existing intellectual property.
  • Contribute to the development and submission of patent applications for innovative designs and technologies.
  • Participate in design reviews, offering constructive feedback to enhance product quality and performance.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Production, and Quality Engineering to align product development with business goals.
  • Engage technical leadership and mentorship from within the Product Design Team to gain knowledge and experience with complex firearm product features and capabilities.
  • Improve existing products and processes, including documentation updates, sustainment engineering, and issue resolution.
  • Address challenges related to product performance, supplier quality, and production efficiency.
  • Contribute to strategic development of design, testing, and verification processes and equipment capabilities.
  • Support other projects as needed, stepping in to help the team meet company-wide objectives.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and initiative, including working outside standard hours when necessary to meet project deadlines.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel may be required to support testing, supplier coordination, or customer engagement.
  • Develop innovative solutions in areas with limited standardization or precedent.
Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with performing engineering tasks related to manufacturing, operations, and/or quality functions are preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanics, manufacturing processes, and materials science.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements related to manufacturing environments.
  • Passion for product development and a commitment to producing high-quality products.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T, with willingness to become proficient through application of Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, Inspection (DFMAI) principles.
  • Experience in developing products for commercial and government sectors.
  • Experience with measuring equipment (Micro Height, Calipers, Comparator, etc.).

 

Software Knowledge

  • PTC CREO CAD experience desired
  • Windchill - Database Management Software
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Enventive Concept desired

Skills Required
