Northrop Grumman is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support our Armament Systems Business Unit based in Plymouth, MN.

Position Description

This role provides mechanical and production engineering support for the manufacture and test of medium caliber ammunition.  In general, as a member of an integrated product team, you will be providing engineering support to distributed manufacturing and test locations, investigating and solving manufacturing or test issues, developing and documenting manufacturing processes, coordinating efforts between internal and external functional groups, supporting manufacturing and ammunition testing, supporting communications with our customers, and providing support and oversight to material suppliers.

Typical Duties (Including but not limited to)

  • Translate contract requirements and specifications into build and test requirements
  • Create, publish, review and maintain all necessary documentation required for new and existing manufacturing programs which may include the following:
  • TDP reviews for correctness and completeness
  • Engineering Changes, release, and incorporation into the process
  • Manufacturing work instructions
  • Manufacturing bills of material and routings
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is in Configuration Management system
  • Develop task releases, get them approved and introduced into the manufacturing system
  • Prepare for and support Build Readiness Reviews and Production Readiness Reviews
  • Create test requests and support test readiness reviews
  • Support Engineering disposition on non-conforming products from internal and external sources
  • Support Engineering approval of proposed process changes from internal and external sources
  • Participate in Failure Analysis and Corrective Actions to drive the rapid resolution of complex production issues.
  • Assist in the resolution of complex manufacturing line process issues such as machining, metal finishing, painting, heat treating, assembly, and test
  • Coordinate production efforts between internal functional disciplines including Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, Manufacturing, and Test.
  • Monitor In-Process Testing and Final Lot Acceptance Testing for compliance with performance specification requirements
  • Assist in the preparation of and participate in customer meetings and program reviews
  • Traveling to production, test and supplier facilities up to about 25%

Basic Qualifications

This position may be filled as a Mechanical Engineer level 2 or 3, depending on the candidate’s education and/or years of experience.

Qualifications for Mechanical Engineer (Level 2)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of experience as Mechanical Engineer; or master’s degree in lieu of experience.
  • Ability to complete significant technical tasks as directed by the team lead and to provide work direction/coordination to other technical team members.
  • Experience working and communicating with customers, program management, and engineering management.
  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical systems, electromechanical mechanisms, manufacturing processes, metal fabrication, and standard assembly processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively with a wide variety of multi‑disciplinary personnel in remote settings and build strong, trusting relationships.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and MS Project.
  • US citizenship required.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

Qualifications for Principal Mechanical Engineer (Level 3)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of experience as Mechanical Engineer; or master’s degree + 3 years of experience.
  • Ability to complete significant technical tasks as directed by the team lead and to provide work direction/coordination to other technical team members.
  • Experience working and communicating with customers, program management, and engineering management.
  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical systems, electromechanical mechanisms, manufacturing processes, metal fabrication, and standard assembly processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

Primary Level Salary Range: $79,600.00 - $119,400.00Secondary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
