The Mechanical Engineer Lead is responsible for leading mechanical engineering scope on assigned projects from concept through design, procurement, fabrication support, installation and commissioning readiness. The role provides mechanical engineering judgment, coordinates inputs from internal teams, partners, vendors and contractors, and helps ensure deliverables are practical, compliant, cost-aware and aligned with project objectives. The role reports to the Director of Delivery - Engineering and may guide engineers, designers, contractors or partner resources assigned to the work.

Roles and Responsibilities

The role serves to lead mechanical engineering services for FFC projects, including design development, equipment specification, vendor coordination and engineering deliverables that support the development of fusion fuel cycle systems and infrastructure.

Required Strengths and Competencies

  • Lead mechanical engineering services for assigned projects, work packages or systems, including planning, prioritization, delivery coordination and progress tracking.

  • Develop, review and approve mechanical engineering deliverables, including specifications, design criteria, datasheets, calculations, drawings, equipment lists and requisition packages.

  • Support design of mechanical systems and equipment such as pressure vessels, piping, supports, enclosures, skids, tanks, process equipment and related mechanical infrastructure.

  • Evaluate design options and make recommendations that balance safety, quality, operability, maintainability, cost, schedule and project risk.

  • Review vendor proposals, drawings, calculations and documentation for alignment with project requirements, codes, standards and purchase order requirements.

  • Participate in procurement activities, including scope definition, bid review, clarification meetings, vendor selection input and change review.

  • Coordinate with process, electrical, controls, safety, quality, project delivery and external partner teams to resolve design issues and maintain interface alignment.

  • Support fabrication, inspection, testing, non-conformance resolution, logistics, installation planning and commissioning readiness activities.

  • Provide engineering input into schedules, effort estimates, resource plans, risk registers, change logs and project reporting.

  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable engineering codes, standards, quality requirements, document control practices and FFC procedures.

  • Mentor and guide engineers, designers, consultants or partner resources, and provide review and direction on assigned mechanical engineering work.

  • Travel to project sites, vendor facilities, partner locations or fabrication shops as required.

  • Mechanical engineering deliverables are complete, accurate, reviewed and aligned with project scope, schedule, budget and quality requirements.

  • Mechanical systems and equipment are designed and specified in a manner that supports safe, reliable and maintainable project delivery.

  • Vendor and contractor engineering submissions are reviewed on time, and issues are resolved or escalated appropriately.

  • Interfaces with internal teams, partners, suppliers and contractors are actively managed to reduce rework, delays and design conflicts.

  • Engineering decisions, assumptions, risks and changes are documented and communicated in a clear and traceable manner.

Must have

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (preferred), or eligibility and commitment to obtain registration within 6 months (required).

  • 8+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, including experience leading engineering scope or work packages in an industrial, energy, nuclear, process, manufacturing or complex infrastructure environment.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design, equipment specification, mechanical calculations, pressure equipment, piping, supports and fabrication practices.

  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards, which may include ASME BPVC, ASME B31.3, CSA, API, TSSA and other applicable Canadian or project-specific requirements.

  • Experience with procurement support, vendor document review, fabrication support, inspection/testing activities and resolution of engineering issues.

  • Ability to lead through influence in a matrix environment and coordinate work across internal teams, external partners, vendors and contractors.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario
  • Eligibility and commitment to obtain P.Eng. (Ontario) within 6 months
