What we need
Symbotic is seeking Mechanical Engineers at all levels to join our Mobile Robot Engineering team within our Core Hardware Engineering org. You will be responsible for working on the creation, modification, and improvements of robotic equipment used in warehouse automation in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team. You will work as a member of the team in the conceptualization, design, analysis, fabrication, and testing of Symbotic's automated material handling equipment.

The Mechanical Engineering team, as part of the larger Hardware Engineering group, is at the forefront of designing and developing state-of-the-art mechanical solutions for industrial automation. We focus on the creation of large-scale capital equipment, integrating advanced robotic systems and mechanical structures tailored for robust industrial applications. Our engineers, guided by a seasoned leadership, are deeply involved in the entire lifecycle of product development—from conceptualization to deployment—ensuring that our innovative designs meet practical, real-world needs. We prioritize cross-functional collaboration, continuously refine our engineering processes, and uphold high standards in mechanical design to align with the strategic goals of the company and the evolving demands of the market.
What you’ll do
Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) in PLM
Update and maintain CAD drawings in the PDM system
Contribute to the conception, analysis, prototyping, detailed design, and validation of complex electromechanical systems using SolidWorks, MathCad, and other similar programs
Create quantitative trade studies to evaluate designs and identify optimum solutions
Contribute solutions that satisfy customer needs and enable new market opportunities
Investigate outside sources and evaluate and validate mechanical components such as motors, sensors, and bearings.
Perform tolerance analysis on mechanical assemblies and create mechanical drawings
Assist in assembling prototypes, testing, troubleshooting, and implementing design changes
Apply model-based design and simulation techniques to optimize systems and ensure design accuracy before implementation.
Collaborate on mechatronics design and mechanisms, integrating electrical and mechanical components to enhance overall system performance.
Focus on reliability engineering, identifying potential risks and implementing strategies to enhance system robustness and longevity.
Design housings, channels, and protective systems for wires, connectors, and PCB-mounted components to meet reliability and safety standards.
Perform thermal, vibration, and structural analyses to validate designs for robustness and long-term operation.
Travel up to 50% to customer sites to support new installations
What you’ll need
BS in Mechanical Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
Minimum 7 years of work experience in a hands-on Mechanical engineering or design role.
Pertinent experience in the robotics industry or other relevant field.
Experience in designing parts for a variety of manufacturing processes: machining, casting, sheet metal, plastics, fabricated assemblies, etc.
Proficiency in creating dimensional drawings per ANSI Y14.5 standards.
Expertise in power distribution and signal transmission design for mobile robotics.
Familiarity with routing, housing, and securing electrical and data cables.
Knowledge of connectors, power bus structures, and EMI shielding considerations.
Knowledge of SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and other CAD software; experience with FEA is an asset.
Versed in design and drafting standards.
Understanding of fabrication processes (turning, milling, welding, etc.).
Our Environment
Up to 50% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
The base range for this position in Bay Area, California is $105,000 - $172,000; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonus and equity may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits based on the position offered. This information is provided per the California Salary Transparency Law.
