We are seeking an experienced Industrial Refrigeration Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in ammonia refrigeration systems serving food and beverage processing, production, cold storage, and related industrial facilities.

Position Overview

The Industrial Refrigeration Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the engineering, design, analysis, and technical support of industrial ammonia (NH₃) refrigeration systems used in food and beverage processing, production, cold storage, and distribution environments.

This remote position will take technical ownership of refrigeration system designs from initial concept and field investigation through detailed engineering, construction support, commissioning, and project completion. Light travel to customer facilities and project sites may be required.

The Engineer will work closely with customers, project managers, estimators, field personnel, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and other engineering disciplines to develop safe, reliable, efficient, and constructible refrigeration solutions.

Key ResponsibilitiesRefrigeration System Design & Engineering
  • Design industrial ammonia refrigeration systems for food and beverage processing, production, cold storage, and distribution facilities, including new construction, expansions, upgrades, and retrofit projects.
  • Develop refrigeration system concepts, equipment layouts, piping arrangements, and detailed engineering packages.
  • Perform refrigeration load calculations, equipment sizing, pipe sizing, pressure-drop calculations, and other engineering calculations required for system design.
  • Select and specify compressors, condensers, evaporators, vessels, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, controls, and other refrigeration system components.
  • Design and evaluate single-stage, two-stage, and parallel compressor refrigeration systems as applicable to project requirements.
  • Develop and review P&IDs, process flow diagrams, equipment schedules, piping plans, mechanical room layouts, and construction drawings.
  • Prepare equipment specifications, engineering documentation, scopes of work, and technical reports.
  • Evaluate existing refrigeration equipment and systems and provide recommendations for repair, modification, replacement, expansion, or optimization.
  • Incorporate energy efficiency, maintainability, reliability, and safe operation into system designs.
Project Engineering & Execution
  • Provide engineering support throughout the project lifecycle, from conceptual design and estimating through fabrication, construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Review project requirements, customer specifications, contracts, drawings, and existing facility conditions.
  • Conduct site surveys and field investigations to gather information required for engineering and design.
  • Coordinate refrigeration designs with structural, electrical, controls, plumbing, architectural, and other project disciplines.
  • Review equipment submittals, vendor drawings, fabrication drawings, and technical documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Work closely with project managers and field teams to resolve design and installation issues.
  • Review field changes and redlines and support development of accurate as-built documentation.
  • Provide technical assistance during system startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance verification.
  • Participate in project meetings and communicate technical requirements and recommendations to customers and project stakeholders.
Codes, Standards & Safety
  • Design refrigeration systems in accordance with applicable codes, regulations, customer requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable industrial refrigeration standards, including IIAR and ASHRAE requirements.
  • For Canadian projects, apply applicable requirements including CSA B52, provincial codes, pressure equipment requirements, and other jurisdictional regulations.
  • Apply applicable ASME/ANSI piping and pressure-system requirements.
  • Support Process Safety Management, risk assessments, hazard reviews, and other refrigeration safety initiatives as applicable.
  • Ensure engineering designs consider safe system operation, serviceability, emergency response, and regulatory compliance.
  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout engineering, construction, and field activities.
Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a technical resource for project managers, field personnel, estimators, service technicians, and customers.
  • Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and designs for technical accuracy and constructability.
  • Assist in developing engineering standards, design practices, specifications, and standardized documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Associate Engineers, Engineers-in-Training, designers, and drafting personnel.
  • Support troubleshooting of complex refrigeration system performance and operational issues.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to system design, engineering processes, and project execution.
