Key Responsibilities
- Support HVAC design from concept through construction documents under the direction of senior engineers and project managers
- Develop HVAC drawings, schedules, details, and BIM models using Revit and AutoCAD
- Perform HVAC load calculations, equipment selections, ductwork sizing, hydronic piping sizing, ventilation calculations, and energy code support
- Assist with plumbing design, including domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, and basic equipment coordination
- Coordinate HVAC with architectural, structural, civil, electrical, plumbing, and fire suppression disciplines
- Review design work for compliance with applicable building codes and industry standards
- Support preparation of permit drawings, specifications, narratives, calculations, and other technical documentation
- Participate in interdisciplinary coordination meetings and help resolve routing, equipment, space planning, and constructability issues
- Conduct field surveys, document existing conditions, and support construction administration activities including RFIs, submittals, site observations, and punch lists
- Use Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud (Forma), and other collaboration tools to support design reviews and project coordination
- Support project managers and discipline leads with budgets, schedules, task planning, and quality control reviews
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
- 1 to 5 years of experience in HVAC systems design
- Experience with application of building codes and standards
- Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD for mechanical design
- Familiarity with engineering calculations and HVAC load calculation software such as Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, IES, or similar tools
- Ability to coordinate across disciplines and communicate technical information clearly
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to support multiple projects and deadlines
- EIT certification preferred, or active path toward EIT certification and eventual PE licensure
- Experience with City of Chicago Department of Buildings permit documents and local Illinois authorities having jurisdiction
- Experience with plumbing design beyond basic coordination, including pipe sizing, fixture calculations, water heating, storm drainage, and gas systems
- Fire suppression design or coordination experience, including sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire pumps, and applicable NFPA standards
- Experience with COMcheck or other energy code compliance documentation
- Experience with mission critical, public sector, higher education, industrial, commercial, residential, or infrastructure-related building projects
- Field experience with existing condition surveys, installation reviews, troubleshooting, commissioning, or punch list activities
