Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Description

Brooks is a growing, fast-paced technology leader of automation solutions which support the dynamic and expanding semiconductor and life sciences lab markets.

Brooks – Laboratory Automation Solutions (LAS) is a global leader in designing and manufacturing innovative automation solutions that optimise workflows across diverse laboratory environments. From clinical diagnostics to research, life sciences, and industrial applications, we deliver compact, intelligent systems that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. At Brooks LAS, we foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability. We are passionate about solving real-world challenges in laboratory automation and empowering our teams to think boldly, act with purpose, and continuously learn.

We’re looking for a passionate Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team and help drive innovation in laboratory automation. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge solutions that support the medical industry and improve lives around the world.

As part of our dynamic and collaborative environment, you’ll play a key role in designing and developing products that truly make a difference.

What you’ll do:

  • Be a lead in the design and development of high-quality machinery solutions, including concept design, detailed CAD models using PTC Creo, 2D manufacturing drawings, prototype builds, testing, validation, and transfer to manufacturing.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, customers, and suppliers to drive new product development and support the existing product range.

  • Create and maintain accurate technical documentation to support design, manufacturing, and compliance requirements.

  • Prototype and test mechanical designs to ensure performance, reliability, and adherence to industry standards.

  • Support manufacturing and assembly, providing hands-on technical guidance and resolving design-related issues.

  • Mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and experience to foster growth and innovation within the team.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance product performance, reduce costs, and streamline processes.

  • Stay informed on emerging technologies and industry trends to inform design decisions and maintain a competitive edge.

What you’ll bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Mechanical, Medical, Mechatronics), Industrial Design, or a related discipline.

  • 7+ years of experience in product design engineering, with hands-on expertise in developing automation products featuring electro-mechanical components such as motors, gears, pulleys, and sensors—ideally within machinery, small appliances, or materials handling industries.

  • Strong capability in detailed part/component design, including tolerance stack-ups and custom part development (not just catalogue selection).

  • Creative problem-solving skills and out-of-the-box thinking to develop innovative solutions.

  • Proficiency in developing 2D manufacturing drawings using PTC Creo, with knowledge of GD&T highly desirable.

  • Solid understanding of materials and manufacturing techniques, and how they influence design decisions.

  • Proven experience in new product development, from conceptual design through to production release.

  • A proactive approach to mentoring and supporting junior engineers, contributing to a culture of learning and continuous improvement.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to share ideas, solve problems, and build productive relationships.

  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to quality, safety, and compliance in all aspects of your work.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage priorities, and consistently deliver results within agreed timeframes.

  • A passion for innovation and staying up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends.

At Brooks LAS, we foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability. We are passionate about solving real-world challenges in laboratory automation and empowering our teams to think boldly and act with purpose. Our culture is built on:

  • Customer-first mindset – We listen, adapt, and deliver with precision.

  • Agility and ownership – We move fast, take initiative, and own outcomes.

  • Global collaboration – We thrive on diverse perspectives and cross-functional teamwork.

  • Continuous learning – We invest in growth, mentorship, and knowledge sharing.

  • Integrity and respect – We operate with transparency and value every voice.
