Job Title:
Mechanical Design EngineerReporting To:
Manager, Design EngineeringWork Schedule:
Onsite – Phoenix, AZMission & Impact
The Mechanical Engineering department at Moog Gilbert is looking for a motivated mechanical engineer to join a team that designs and packages spacecraft electronics. You will own the mechanical elements of integrated avionics units end to end: hardware design and electronics packaging, structural/thermal analysis, documentation, and environmental testing — and you’ll see your work directly contribute to mission readiness and customer acceptance. If you bring strong CAD experience with hands on hardware design, we’ll train you on Moog’s tools and processes (e.g., ANSYS Workbench, SolidWorks, Teamcenter). You do not need every preferred skill to apply; strong candidates typically meet ~80% and show willingness to learn.
What You’ll Do
• Mechanical Design for Spacecraft Avionics: Design and develop spacecraft avionics assemblies using SolidWorks 3D CAD software. Produce dimensioned and annotated drawings of piece parts and assemblies per ASME Y14.5.
• Structural and Thermal Analysis: Develop closed-form and finite element model solutions (using ANSYS Workbench) to address and assess structural and thermal requirements of the design.
• Documentation of Results: Produce detailed design reviews and analysis reports documenting design, structural, and thermal analyses.
• Environmental Test Planning and Execution: Develop detailed test plans for hardware per customer requirements for vibration, shock, and thermal testing. In-person support of environmental test efforts for integrated avionics units.
• Manufacturing Support: Assess mechanical integration/assembly issues and develop solutions to manufacture complex electronics assemblies. Nonconformance assessment and disposition.
• Collaborate Cross Functionally: partner with systems, electrical design, manufacturing, test, and program management to meet schedule, cost, and technical goals.
Core Qualifications (Must-Have)
• 2-7 years in a Mechanical Engineering role with emphasis on design and/or structural analysis.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks preferred).
• Practical experience designing mechanical parts and assemblies.
• Experience with closed-form or finite element analysis of mechanical assemblies (thermal and structural).
• Strong ability to communicate ideas and results verbally and written.
Preferred Qualifications (We Will Train Where Needed)
• Familiarity with spacecraft hardware and requirements.
• Experience with electronics packaging and design.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D design software.
• Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS preferred).
• Understanding of Steinberg fatigue analysis of PCB assemblies.
• Experience in Teamcenter PLM software.
• Experience with random vibration, shock, and thermal vacuum requirements and testing. Previous support of environmental testing a plus.
Growth & Development
• Structured onboarding with mentorship and exposure to multiple spacecraft programs.
• Targeted training on Moog specific tools/architectures (ANSYS, Teamcenter)
• Clear technical progression toward senior mechanical engineering role.
