Mechanical Design Engineer – Aftermarket Projects

Location: Robesonia, PA

About the Role

Reading Bakery Systems is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support equipment rebuilds, retrofits, upgrades, and modernization projects for existing customer systems.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex mechanical problems involving older equipment, legacy drawings, incomplete documentation, and field-modified machinery. The engineer will own assigned aftermarket designs from initial technical review through manufacturing, installation, and field support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create mechanical designs for equipment rebuilds, retrofits, upgrades, modifications, and repair projects.
  • Develop 3D models, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of materials, and installation documentation.
  • Review, update, and convert legacy drawings to current engineering standards.
  • Reverse engineer components and assemblies when accurate documentation is unavailable.
  • Design replacement parts and modifications that integrate with existing customer equipment.
  • Travel to customer facilities to inspect equipment, verify dimensions, and document field conditions.
  • Support project quotations through technical review, scope clarification, preliminary concepts, and feasibility input.
  • Collaborate with Technical Sales, Project Management, Mechanical and Electrical Design, Manufacturing, Service, and Installation teams.
  • Identify design risks, interferences, missing information, and installation concerns early in the project.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing, installation, and equipment startup.
  • Assist with pretzel die, wirecut die, and related tooling designs as needed.
  • Maintain accurate drawings, revisions, bills of materials, and project documentation.
 Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Mechanical design experience involving industrial machinery, automated equipment, food-processing systems, or custom-engineered equipment.
  • Proficiency with 3D mechanical design software; Solid Edge experience is preferred.
  • Experience producing detailed drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials.
  • Knowledge of tolerances, fits, materials, fabrication methods, and mechanical manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with equipment retrofits, legacy designs, field measurements, or reverse engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and communicate effectively across technical teams.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain and maintain a passport.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15–25%.
