Position Overview
Senior Network Engineers apply their advanced information technology expertise to design, implement, and maintain their employer's enterprise network infrastructure. They lead and collaborate with network professionals and IT personnel to architect robust solutions, enforce cyber security measures, deploy hardware and software, and resolve complex network issues. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that company networks are secure, highly available, and aligned with business goals and objectives.
Senior Network Engineers serve as a technical authority within the IT organization, mentoring junior staff and driving best practices across network operations. They may also be responsible for leading employee training initiatives, developing technical documentation, and creating instruction manuals to help employees effectively navigate company network systems.
Job Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain enterprise-level LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, and wireless network infrastructure
- Lead the planning and execution of network upgrades, migrations, and new technology deployments
- Monitor network performance and availability using industry-standard tools, proactively identifying and resolving issues before they impact business operations
- Architect and enforce network security policies, including firewall rule sets, VPN configurations, access control lists (ACLs), and intrusion detection/prevention systems
- Manage and optimize routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP) and switching technologies including VLANs, STP, and trunking
- Oversee IP address management (IPAM), DNS, DHCP, and certificate infrastructure
- Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams including systems, security, and cloud engineering to support infrastructure projects
- Provide Tier 3 escalation support for complex network incidents and perform root cause analysis
- Develop and maintain network diagrams, runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and other technical documentation
- Evaluate and recommend new network technologies, vendors, and tools to improve performance, scalability, and cost efficiency
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level network engineers
- Ensure network infrastructure compliance with internal security policies and regulatory requirements
- Participate in on-call rotation to support critical network incidents outside of business hours
- Lead and coordinate with vendors and service providers for circuit provisioning, hardware procurement, and support escalations
Minimum Skills In
- Deep understanding of enterprise IP networking, including subnetting, routing, and switching
- Advanced knowledge of DHCP, DNS, PKI/certificates, and network services
- Active Directory integration with network infrastructure (RADIUS, 802.1X, NAC)
- NTFS and share permissions as they relate to network file services
- Thorough understanding of network hardware distinctions (collision domains, broadcast domains, Layer 2 vs. Layer 3 behavior, etc.)
- Advanced knowledge of networking protocols including BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, STP, LACP, and SNMP
- Proficiency with network monitoring, packet capture, and diagnostic tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds, PRTG)
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills with the ability to perform root cause analysis in high-pressure situations
- Exceptional attention to detail in configuration management and change control processes
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated project management skills with experience leading network initiatives from design through implementation
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Network Administration, or a related field
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in network engineering roles
- Cisco CCNP (or higher)
- CompTIA Network+
- Microsoft certifications in Windows Server and Windows Client
- Experience managing enterprise firewall platforms (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience with network security best practices and frameworks
Preferred
- Experience with Extreme Networks, Juniper, or Cisco enterprise equipment
- CCIE, Wireshark Network Analyst, or AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty
- Experience with SD-WAN platforms (Cisco Viptela, VMware VeloCloud, etc.)
- Familiarity with cloud networking in AWS, Azure, or GCP environments
- Experience with network automation and scripting (Python, Ansible, Terraform)
- Exposure to Zero Trust network architecture principles
