Position Summary

The WPS 1060 Foundations of Math course will review basic algebra with the aim that students reach proficiency in quantitative skills to pursue other college level courses. Topics to be included will contain arithmetic of whole numbers, signed numbers, fractions, decimals and percents, polynomial arithmetic, algebraic expressions, factoring, solving equations (linear and quadratic) with applications, and graphing. This class is a graduation requirement and prerequisite for college level math and science courses at WPU.

Requirements

  • Exhibit a working knowledge of instructional methods, educational materials, and effective pedagogy for teaching foundations level basic math and algebraic concepts.

  • Ensure that course is taught in accordance with the established syllabi, while following all established deadlines.

  • Reach out to at-risk students who have not been attending/participating in class to provide support and encourage re-engagement.

  • Instruction including delivery of instruction and theory in-class, including hands-on assignments designed to provide real-time feedback and targeted instructional support

  • Responsible for classroom management, lesson plan development, and tutoring opportunities.

  • Conducts regular assessments of student performance and maintains up to date records of student academic progress, attendance, and in-class activities / exams; tracking trends in engagement and skill gaps to prepare various reports and recommend students for tutoring.

  • Experience using multiple approaches to teaching and learning, such as incorporating technology, contextualized instruction, multiple levels, or innovative approaches that support increased student success.

  • Skilled in use of technology (interactive lessons and course software such as Blackboard, Navigate and EdReady) to deliver quality instruction and perform necessary admin related tasks for student tracking and reports.

  • Provide appropriate referrals to Director, student support services and other university resources as necessary to help students achieve their academic goals.

  • Strong communication and writing skills for interoffice alignment and collaboration.

  • Must have a sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, special needs, and ethnic backgrounds of college students.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Must be able to teach during day time hours 9am-3pm (in person).

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have experience teaching developmental mathematics at the secondary or college level. Teaching experience in a community college setting is preferred, and experience with online instruction is a plus. Strong computer skills are required due to intensive use of an online mathematics course management system. Must be able to work onsite. 

Part-Time Project Employee - Starting at $3750 per course with potential for increase
